Product Review Mini Toys Diecast Break Down Dragunov Modern ...

Well, I received this rifle in the mail today from Cotswold Collectibles. I though I'd bang out a basic review for those on the fence on this one. In a nutshell, so so. Not horrible, but not outstanding either. It's a decent piece, but nothing to write home about. Features include, all pieces of diecast metal construction, removable magazine, individual brass rounds inside magazine, working magazine catch, working trigger, pivoting safety, working spring loaded charging handle, and pivoting rear sight.

Cons: All pieces are cast in the same gun metal color, including the stock and both sides of the fore grip. I ordered the black synthetic set, but had to paint the appropriate pieces flat black. Really not a break down rifle. Once you assemble this kit, it's not really made to come apart. The small screws that hold everything together are self tappers, meaning they cut thread as they screw in. Back them out, and they can damage the material. Fabricated or made up bi-pod and mount location. Krechet pointed this out from early pics. He's dead on. There is absolutely no photo evidence of the bi-pod and how it's mounted on the foregrip. No operating rod for the charging handle spring. The charging handle works, but binds easily. Unrealistic charging handle. Just a small flat handle on a spring, with a cut out slot in the receiver. No real bolt carrier of any kind, like the Soldier Story metal and wood AK. Turned brass rounds in magazine, and included loose are not well made. This baby fires the big 7.62x54 fully rimmed Russian round. The small brass rounds included have no rim or detail on the back, and the bullet head and neck are one in the same. Even DML makes better brass rounds. No front sling loop or attachment of any kind. Simple PSO-1 diecast scope without any real detail. 21st Century Toys has a nicer PSO-1.

Pros: Nice heft and feel to this piece. The diecast pieces are well made. Excellent working magazine well, and catch. This function shines above all the rest. Good magazine detail with multiple rounds stacked up inside. Awesome bored out muzzle with open flash hider slots. Really well done barrel and front end.

Overall: A decent representation of the Dragunov rifle, and the only diecast out there. Will build up nice for troops who don't customize, but will need work to overcome the two readily visible flaws of the stock/fore grip, and bi-pod. Working features not bad, but could have been executed better. Sorry there's only one photo, I'm having camera and photobucket/java issues.
