Paul Ryan by the Numbers: $5 Trillion in Federal Savings

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., makes his first solo campaign trip to the Iowa State Fair Monday, just two days after Mitt Romney's campaign announced the 42-year-old as the GOP pick for vice president. The Associated Press reports Ryan's stop in Des Moines will shadow campaign appearances by President Barack Obama in Iowa the same day.

Ryan is seen as a conservative pick for the presumptive GOP nominee. Some of the representative's numbers show him to be a high-risk, high-reward candidate.

5 trillion: The number of dollars Ryan's "Path to Prosperity " plan cuts from the federal budget in the coming decade. Ryan does so while promising not to raise taxes. The budget plan also lowers federal spending to just 3 percent of the country's gross domestic product by 2015. The plan has been circulated as Ryan's idea for the House Budget Committee to consider.

554 billion: The number of dollars Ryan's plan sets aside for annual Department of Defense spending. This amount is said to "keep America safe" with defense budgeting at levels requested by military commanders.
