NJ Supreme Court Rules ? Pets Are Not Family ? Agree or Disagree ...

Flikr user tsmithucalgary – a fur baby maltipoo

Flikr user tsmithucalgary ? a fur baby maltipoo

This has to be tough for anyone who thinks of their dog as a ?fur baby.?

In a ruling pertaining to a case that dates back to 2007, the NJ Supreme Court ruled against a woman who?s was suing for emotional distress when her maltipoo was mauled by a neighbor?s dog in Morris Plains.

According to this:

The case stems from the experience of Joyce McDougall, who witnessed her maltipoo, Angel, being mauled to death on Mountain Way in Morris Plains on June 7, 2007.

A large, mixed-breed dog ran out from a garage of the home of Charlot Lamm on Mountain Way as McDougall ? a visitor to the area from Virginia ? was walking Angel.

The large dog grabbed Angel by the neck, shook her several times and dropped her to the ground dead.

Lamm conceded liability and a bench trial was held in Morris County on damages. The judge, who heard testimony from McDougall on her close relationship with her pet, awarded her $5,000 for the value of the dog but found that case law did not support a recovery for emotional distress because animals are considered property. The appellate division, and now the Supreme Court, upheld the trial judge.

I can safely say that were I to see little ?Soaph-a-loaf? (my daughter?s beagle/daschaund mix) undergo a similar fate; I too?yes, even I, would be traumatized by the sight of such an unthinkable event.

But still, a dog is a dog?not a person!

The ruling went on to say:

?Although we recognize that many people form close bonds with their pets, we conclude that those bonds do not rise to the level of a close familial relationship or intimate, marital-like bond,? the court said in a 36-page opinion.

?The bond shared between humans and animals is often an emotional and enduring one,? the court said. ?Permitting it to support a recovery for emotional distress, however, would require either that we vastly expand the classes of human relationships that would qualify for (damages) or that we elevate relationships with animals above those we share with other human beings.?
You may want to grab your ?fur baby? now, hold it, and whisper into its ear, ??bad bad Supreme Court. How dare they say you?re not my family!?

Do you agree with the NJ Supreme Court?s ruling that pets are not family?

Deutsche Bank appoints veteran Ravneet Gill as India CEO

MUMBAI: The largest German lender Deutsche Bank today elevated Ravneet Gill as the country chief executive of its operations here after his predecessor Gunit Chadha was moved to a larger management role in June.

Prior to his appointment as the chief executive, Gill headed the capital markets and treasury solutions, and oversaw the successful integration of corporate treasury sales, debt capital markets and corporate banking coverage in the country, the German lender said in a statement.

Chadha, under whom the India operations became the fifth largest unit for Deutsche globally, was in June elevated as co-chief executive of Asia Pacific along with Alan Cloete.

Gill, who will be reporting to Chadha and Cloete, will oversee all of Deutsche Bank's businesses here, including corporate banking and securities, global transaction banking, private and business clients and asset and wealth management, the foreign private lender said in a statement issued here.

Gill, a Masters degree from the Delhi University, has over 26 years experience in the banking sector and joined the German bank in 1991 at the private wealth management and moved to the corporate banking division in 1993.

In 2003, he took over as head of corporate banking coverage and held the position till December 2008 when he was appointed head of coverage for global markets and built a dominant flow franchise to compliment the platform's structured products' capabilities.

Last year, Gill took over as head of capital markets & treasury solutions.

Interview With Michael D. Sellers, Who Produced

Interview With Michael D. Sellers, Who Produced ?Karla? for MovieBank Studios
The following is an interview with Michael D. Sellers, who developed (with the aid of intrepid moviebank studios investors) the controversial film ?Karla? for MovieBank Studios. The film depicts the crimes of the infamous Canadian husband & wife slaying team of Karla Homolka & Paul Bernardo. Its acquittance in Canada was met with howls of objection from Canadian politicians & media outlets.

Q: This is undoubtedly one of the most controversial, wild articles in modern Canadian history, & it is essentially still unfolding. Karla Homolka, who was just brought out from jail a couple of months ago, was still in jail when you began making this film. Did you ever so sense
you were making the film ?too soon??

A: Well, when the conveived of doing a project on Karla Homolka & Paul Bernardo was premier brought to me by director Joel Bender, it was January 2004 & ?Monster? was in the theaters. The murders in that motion picture took spot at about the same time that these do so initially, no, we conveived enough of time had passed. Indeed, now, as the film is being brought out ? the murders themselves are fifteen years in the past. But there
are incomparable views to this subject which have kept it alive in uncommon styles ? Karla?s plea negotiate & resulting brief jail stay, her acquittance this recent summer, the courtroom overturning the post-release restrictions. All of these stuff have kept the tale alive & made it seem like the crimes were committed yesterday. But it?s been fifteen years, & we conveive that is a reasonable, & respectful total of time.

Q: You did explore a fine negotiate about the legal ramifications of saying this story, & were in close communicating with congressmen of the victims? families. Could you speak about that procedure a bit & what the effect was of your discussions?

A: From the beginning, Tim Danson?the attorney who represents the victims? families?said that the families respected our right to make the motion picture & would only contradict it whenever the film incorporated depictions of their daughters which might fairly be construed as either disrespectful or pornographic. Tim characterized pornographic as nakedness or simulated intercourse on screen by the actresses portraying the victims. We never intended to include either of those components in the film, so there was very no problem. When we finished the edit, I took a reflect to Toronto & showed it to Tim, & they concurred that it was not pornographic & they would not contradict the acquittance of the film. Misha Collins & Laura Prepon in ?Karla?

Q: There were articles that you removed numerous scenes at the families? request.

A: We removed 8 frames ? 1/3 of one 2nd ? of a long shot crosswise a room since Tim felt that whenever you played it frame by frame on a DVD you might find out a flash of nakedness which was not detectable when played at normal speed. We concurred to do this. That was the only change. You have to remember ? there had been an ongoing & productive dialogue up to the point wherever we showed the movie, & that dialogue did impact the edit in certain ways?not in the shape of postulates from the family, but just from dialogue & discussion. So there were numerous changes, but not as a result of the screening.

Q: What kind of changes?

A: Well, Tim was capable to provide supplemental background on numerous of the sensitivities of the families, stuff that very were substantial to them,
and we took that into consideration. One exemplar would be the subject of Leslie Mahaffey being locked out of her house, & that playing a role in her becoming accosted by Bernardo. We downplayed that prospect since it?s a sore point for the fellowship & not decisive in any path to our story.

Q: What was the point-of-view from which you needed to present the film?

A: Point of view in this film is interesting, & challenging. On the one hand, it?s Karla?s story. We contact her at the opening as she is about to experience an elongated psychiatric rating in the autumn of 2000, eight years into her 12-year jail term. We watch all of the
events in the past?everything from the earlier scenes with Paul through the crimes & eventually a tiny bit of the trial?from her point of view. But that point of view is repeatedly challenged by the psychiatrist who is interviewing her. He doesn?t ?buy into? her story, but preferably attempts to peel distant the layers of the onion, exposing Karla?s attempts at ?spin?, forcing Karla to recognize stuff that she doesn?t need to acknowledge.

Q: Did your approach to the tale evolve over time?

A: Yes & no. I all of the time felt that it was Karla?s story, not Paul?s. But I think, as we got deeper into it, we began to comprehend the ramifications of this on more levels, & that led to numerous changes.

Q: Such as.?

A: Such as the decisiveness to use the interviews with the psychiatrist as a wraparound. We basically felt that yes, it wants to be Karla?s story, but you need a counterpoint?you cannot let her just say it her path without any counter-argument being presented.
It felt like it would be irresponsible & misleading to not produce a ?dissenting voice? to her story.

Q: What troubles ? logistical, legal, ethical ? did you encounter in commencing production?

A: Logistically, we were shooting Los Angeles for Canada, which is a exchange since generally it?s the else path around. We did find homes which closely matched the genuine homes in St. Catherines, but we had to be careful?too practically panning around with the photographic & palm tree trees
would be visible. And blooad tile roofs, stuff like that. We conveived originally that we would go up & shoot numerous 2nd unit in Canada?but after the filming was total & we had been editing for awhile, it began to seem less substantial since the tale is so practically about this kind of hermetically varnished world in which these 2 folks live. It almost felt like attempt to bring in ?local color? from Canada would
just deceive matters, preferably than enlarge value.

Legally, there were a count of issues. The most substantial one, & the one that impacts the tale the most, is that we might not depict anyone in the Homolka fellowship else than Karla, a convicted felon, & Tammy, who is deceased. That posed troubles but we worked through it, without, I think, compromising the story.

Ethically, it was a subject of constantly remembering, & reminding everybody on the show, that this is not a thriller, this very happened. We felt that this imposed a very strict burden on us to be accurate. No flights of fancy?just attempt to say the fact as we realized it.
And that involves a lot more than the bare facts of the story. The bare facts?this happened, & then this happened, & then this happened?are meaningless unless we are capable to provide insight into the ?why? of these things. Why did Karla let Paul speak her into the
rape of Tammy? Why did she stay with him? Why, when he brought Leslie Mahaffey home, did she join him? Why did she go out on the street & aid him abduct Kristin French? Why did she at last turn on him? The film tries, to the very best of our ability, to deliver meaningful insight into these questions. We felt that, ethically, the film would only have value whenever it did this?that we only had a right to make it whenever we were doing our best to shed airy on these questions.

Q: Among the views that seem to have transfixed the media & the common with this subject are how ordinary, attractive & wholesome Karla Homolka & Paul Bernardo seemed. How did you approach casting these ?couple-next-door? killers?

A: In a way, it would have been practically easier to cast a ?killer couple? who were in numerous path overtly creepy. Finding folks to play that kind of role is relatively easy. But we had to find players who might be convincing?as Paul & Karla were?as ?regular, normal? people, & who might as well be convincing as the killers that they in the finish became. I had recognized Misha Collins from his previous labor & phoned for him to read
for the section ? which he did, by with 100s of others. In the end, he was the hands-down option purely based on the deserve of his audition. Laura Prepon was different story. I do not conveive any of us would have conveived of red-headed Donna from ?That 70?s Show? as the option for Karla ? but her director watched the book & sent it to her, & she liked it & came in to read for it. As shortly as she came in & we talked, then
read a tiny bit, I recognized we had our Karla. She had a tremendous grab of the nature & an power to bring out all sides of Karla.

Q: Some appendages of the Canadian government have phoned for a censor or boycott of the film. Your response?

A: The Canadian government, especially the Ontario government, are viewed by numerous as having dropped the ball in the subject of achieving justice in this situation, & they distinctly have a deeply felt (and politically understandable) need to exhibit proceeded interest & vigilance. I am not a Canadian so I do not very need to commentary on what crosses the course between valid vigilance & intrusive ?big brother?-ness. That?s for Canadians to sort out. But I do comprehend wherever they are coming from. My only genuine complaint is that they made these calls without
having seen the film ? or without even having read any valid reviews of the film. I would note that all of these calls that you are referring to happened earlier any of the reviews came out. Since the premier reviews did seem in August ? there have been no more such calls from government figures, & the families have as well publicly stated that although they do not endorse any motion picture about the crimes, they will not
oppose the acquittance of this one.

Q: You have stated ? to paraphrase ? that this film is not a referendum on Karla?s guilt or innocence, but preferably an exploration of her character.
Could you kindly elaborate?

A: I conveive there might be a inclination in Canada for people, when conceiving Karla, to be overwhelmed by the belief of what she became?Paul?s killer accomplice?and to blank out that this is, indeed, what she became?not what she was when they met. When they met, he was already the Scarborough rapist but she did not recognize that, & she was a high school senior with no history of illegal actions whatsoever. So how did this girl, a high school senior from a responsible, working family, autumn in with Paul, & how & wherefore did she make one decisiveness after different that took her down a very darkish road. We very felt that exploring that journey, preferably than overtly judging Karla, was what the tale was about. Everyone, even killers, have a point of view. They don?t? start out as killers?they become killers. It is this ?becoming? section of it that fascinated me. It seemed to me at the time we were learning & composeing the story, that Karla began from what was for her a ?normal? place, then made once decisiveness after another, every one of which producted a ?new normal?, & which made it easier for the next bad decisiveness to happen. If you appear at it in totality it?s incomprehensible ?but whenever you burst it down into every step, every decisiveness ? then we, the film-makers, have a opportunity to deliver meaningful insight about it. That?s our business ? to deliver meaningful insight. Audiences will estimate KARLA, the film, but I very think they will do so, after seeing it, from a situation of practically bigger realizing of the
factors involved as a result of having seen the movie.

Thread: What disaster economics means for investors - Gold is Money

What disaster economics means for investors

A recent FT article about 'Disaster Economics' by Gillian Tett caught our attention. We've been fans of Ms Tett's work for a while, especially her excellent book 'Fool's Gold'. This article was about the bond markets, but it was some interesting financial history and commentary that caught our attention.

Amidst a discussion of bizarre behaviour in the bond markets, we hear again of recent analysis from Fulcrum Asset Management. Fulcrum have been arguing a generational shift in the perception of, and planning for, disasters amongst investors. As one generational cohort of money managers yields control of the world's portfolios, a new one is emerging that perceives disasters as more frequently occurring than their predecessors.
Tectonic shifts in investment portfolios

Fulcrum point to a contemporary, but possibly previous, tendency (last few decades) of investors to act against a backdrop of disasters and crises as irregular and infrequent. This contemporary investor behaviour is contextualised with reference to the work of the economist Professor Robert Barro. Mr Barro's work finds that although there have been 58 'disasters', a drop in GDP of >10%, in the 20th century, only two occurred post 1950. During this time portfolios positioned for the good times, heavily allocated towards yield and productive investments, have reaped a fine harvest.

But today is different, continue Fulcrum, and investors are changing their perceptions and ultimately their asset allocation. We would urge this phenomenon has a role to play in a 12 year gold and silver bull market.

Investments can indeed be split into two categories; ones that produce returns and ones that offer protection. Or in another way, investors are either worried about the return on their investments, or the return of their investments. Different financial eras reward different investment biases, and investors act accordingly, allocating capital more heavily in one direction or another.
Coming home to roost

This is something we have talked about in these pages before. Our world view, including a perception of an overly leveraged banking system and politically mismanaged national currencies, means we are in favour of safe haven assets, especially those that lack counterparty risk.

Ms Tett finds some weight in the arguments of Fulcrum and draws a number of potential implications. One of these implications being that the need for safe havens may not be a short term phenomenon; we could not agree more. The number of safe haven bonds decreases by the day, and we see flows out of poor quality sovereigns towards Germany and the USA as short term examples of bounded rationality. If you're stuck in the glue factory seeking a stead, you would naturally choose the best looking horse available; a German horse is currently better than a Spanish horse. Ultimately though these German and American financial steads are too debt burdened to stay in the race.

As safe haven bond issuers are whittled down in numbers, non-financial assets such as gold bullion investment will continue to hold appeal. This is one of the reasons we feel there is plenty more juice left in this precious metals bull market. What constitutes a balanced, diversified or efficient portfolio, is indeed subjective, but any thinking investor needs to factor in disaster. Investors need to at least consider the thesis that the 1950 to 2000 period contained some anomalies.
Rethinking investment theory

Another implication that Ms Tett draws out of Fulcrum's thesis is that investment theory needs to be rethought in order to place less historical emphasis on the 'learnings' of the contemporary financial era.

Financial economics has assumed stability and regularity that a longer term appreciation of financial history suggests is misplaced. It is not just Robert Barro's work that suggests this, but other economists who worked with sample periods over 50 years, and other schools of economic and mathematical thought. Try telling proponents of complexity theory that markets are understandable and stable. Jim Rickards provides an excellent articulation of the limitations of financial economics in his best-selling book 'Currency Wars'.

It is interesting to think how such changing perceptions to disaster would affect asset classes and, indeed, investment strategies. Warren Buffet is perhaps the preeminent investor of the 20th Century, but he is at heart a security analyst (with admittedly a fair macro appreciation). How would Mr Buffet's modus operandi reward investors between 2000 and 2030, given his focus on equities and productive investments?

The financial world fell in love with equities in the 1980s and 1990s, with academics such as Professor Jeremy Siegel, and their books like 'Stocks for the long run', being the choir masters. Sample periods have a great deal to play in research and the stocks for the long run mantra may be exposed as excessive dogma, something that some gold investors can also sometimes be guilty of.
The Jim Rogers way and gold investing

We seem to be part-time cheerleaders for Jim Rogers in these pages, but his investing of the last 40+ years has had a broader approach, with wider asset allocation, than the Oracle of Omaha. Most notably is Mr Rogers' more concerned focus on disaster, and less dogmatic love in with equities.

Mr Rogers was a big proponent of real assets in the 1970s, including commodities and precious metals. His performance over that period was stellar, and Mr Rogers has been calling for gold and silver since the turn of the Millennium as well.

If disaster economics is really here to stay, and investor perceptions are melded around this, strategies that pay adequate homage to this may better reward investors. Disaster economics means a more focused and long term attention on safe havens. Some of these safe havens are relatively less able to absorb these potential investment flows; gold and silver especially. Some might ask if the gold investment market is part of such apparent safe haven investing; you bet it is.

Tips for Executives: Finding Jobs the Right Way ? Yapperz.com ...

This process can be performed by the board of directors of the company or an independent company that caters executive search.

This process of selecting employees needs to be done as soon as an executive files for resignation or gets fired to avoid any delaying of work. It will also give a company enough time to select who is the best for the company. When rushing things, people normally tend to overlook certain things that might be crucial for the success of the company.

In executive search, many people take advantage of it by using it as a form of business since large income is definitely on the horizon. This is an extremely lucrative industry that can make search consultants earn large amount of money. In a company that offers this selection process, search consultants' functions in three ways, which are business development, recruiting, and research. A business development consultant gets the largest profit while the researcher gets the smallest. The identification of the potential employee is based on a written or verbal Job Specification developed through partnership with the client.

This company offering the said selection service earns through the company looking for an executive and not from the individual who was hired.

Executive search is very important for any company since this will help in filling in the void left by their former executives. Through this one, a company would be able to select carefully the people to work for them.

One of the biggest mistakes that an executive could make while looking for a position is treating their job search as if they were still a manager. When you reach the level of an executive, you've entered into another world, so you have to treat your job search just like that. This means focusing on different inroads to success and applying cutting-edge search techniques.

If you're coming into the world of an executive and want to know how to make your job search easier, don't just sit back without reviewing every avenue possible. Begin with Networking

It has been shown that over 80 percent of executives got their current job through one form of networking. Executive jobs are not like lower-level jobs which can be easily filled through online applications. Executives meet through social clubs, business meetings and professional routes. You could easily run into someone who knows the vice president of ABC Corporation and be the person they were looking to hire. Don't ever forget the value of networking, the more you get your face out there, the better off you will be. If you don't focus on networking, you could be missing out on a lot of great job opportunities.

Make the Most out of Social Media

LinkedIn is the number one job networking and search site on the web, so set up an account (if you haven't already), because it's incredible important that you make the most out of social media. Just setting up an account is not enough- you have to make yourself be known. RPO Services

Poop Strong: Cancer patient whose costs exceeded insurance cap ...

Arijit, 31, is graduate student in Arizona who was diagnosed about a year and a half ago with stage IV colon cancer. He endured multiple surgeries, and grueling rounds of chemotherapy. Then, in February, 2012, the cost of his treatment exceeded the lifetime limit on his graduate student health plan, which is managed by Aetna.

His coverage was terminated. His cancer was not.

He launched what we cancer patients sometimes refer to as an internet lemonade stand: a site called Poop Strong (a light-hearted parody of "Livestrong"). At poopstrong.org, he invited well-wishers to make a donation or buy schwag, with all proceeds going to his healthcare.

But, big news today, as his pal Kirk Caron tells Boing Boing,

In the six months between when he was dropped and when he'll be picked up by another student health plan, he's been looking at well over $100K in medical bills for his treatments. In addition to updates about his own condition and the state of Poop Strong, Arijit's been tweeting (naturally) about the state of health insurance, and recently, Aetna got involved. The conversation (as Twitter convos tend to do) sort of spirals out from the main thread between Arijit and Aetna.

That's an understatement! Arijit ended up debating directly with the CEO of Aetna, Mark T. Bertolini. The tl;dr: Aetna, and Mr. Bertolini, agreed in the end to cover the full extent of bills that accrued since Arijit was dropped from insurance (about $118,000).

"The system is broken," said Bertolini. "I really am trying to fix it."

Arijit is redirecting all of the donations he received the University of Arizona Cancer Center Patient Assistance Fund and The Wellness Community (Arizona), to directly assist other people with cancer who cannot pay for the life-saving medical treatments they need.

I spoke with Arijit today, and will be publishing a transcript/audio of our conversation soon. He's a really cool guy, and he has some insights from this experience that I think everyone should hear. It looks like Arijit is covered, for now, but the system is still broken. The debate over health care costs has become a political football?but for people like me and Arijit and everyone else in America who isn't in the 1%, health care costs are literally a matter of life and death. No one should suffer or die because they can't afford medical treatment. It really is that simple.

Arijit's friend Jen Wang created a Storify of the twitter exchange between Arijit, Aetna's PR reps, and Aetna's CEO. You can read this below.

Supermodel and Actress Christie Brinkley Will Star as Sexy Jazz ...

ChicagoPHOTO1cropped DPAC2012 Supermodel and Actress Christie Brinkley Will Star as Sexy Jazz Slayer Roxie Hart in Chicago at DPAC

On July 31-Aug. 5, Durham Performing Arts Center will present ?Chicago,? starring Christie Brinkley as former showgirl-turned-sexy jazz slayer Roxanne ?Roxie? Hart (photo by Jeremy Daniel)

Supermodel and actress Christie Brinkley will star as former showgirl-turned-sexy jazz slayer Roxie Hart, who shoots her boyfriend three times when he tries to dump her and then tries to convince her husband to take the blame, in the national tour of legendary director and choreographer Bob Fosse?s Roaring Twenties musical, Chicago, which will play the Durham Performing Arts Center on July 31-Aug. 5. The 58-year-old Monroe, MI native has appeared on more than 500 magazine covers and made, perhaps, her biggest modeling splash as modeling for a number of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues.

The touring version of Chicago that will play eight performances at DPAC is based on the award-winning 1996 Broadway revival of the show, which was directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed in the style of Bob Fosse by Ann Reinking, whose work is faithfully recreated on tour by director Scott Faris and choreographer Gary Chryst. This ?Musical Vaudeville,? which is set in Chicago at the end of the 1920s, features music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Ebb and original director/choreographer Bob Fosse, based on Maurine Dallas Watkins? vintage comedy Chicago (1927).

Besides Christie Brinkley as Roxie Hart, the tour stars Amra-Faye Wright as former vaudevillian and nightclub singer Velma Kelly, whom Roxie?s headline-grabbing crime makes yesterday?s news; and Tony Yazbeck as Velma?s high-priced Windy City criminal defense attorney Billy Flynn, who puts Velma?s case on the backburner while he gin ups favorable publicity for Roxie.

Ron Orbach plays Roxie?s sad-sack husband Amos Hart (a.k.a. ?Mr. Cellophane?); Brent Heuser adds a crisp cameo as Roxie?s no good rat of a boyfriend Fred Casely; Roz Ryan is terrific as corrupt Cook County Jail matron ?Mama? Morton; and R. Lowe portrays sobsister Mary Sunshine, a gullible newspaper columnist who eagerly swallows Flynn?s latest lies neat, with no chaser.

According to the Durham Performing Arts Center:

?After her critically-acclaimed debut as Roxie Hart on Broadway and in London?s West End [both in 2011], Christie Brinkley, one of the world?s most successful supermodels, will make her highly-anticipated Broadway tour debut this spring as she reprises her killer role in the six-time Tony Award?-winning musical smash hit Chicago.

?Chicago producer Barry Weissler said: ?We are thrilled to welcome Christie and her incredible dedication, focus, and determination that she exhibits?. I?m excited to share with audiences the stellar performance that she delivers.?

?Throughout her phenomenal career as one of the country?s most successful and recognizable supermodels, Christie Brinkley has appeared on more than 500 magazine covers worldwide. But more than that, she also excels as an artist, writer, photographer, designer, actress, philanthropist, environmentalist, and political activist. Christie Brinkley recently launched a line of natural skin care products as part of her new company, Christie Brinkley Beauty [https://www.christiebrinkleyskincare.com/shared-beauty.html]. Combining her modeling experience with her artistic talents and diverse interests, Christie?s career over the years has been interesting and dynamic.

?A Ford model for over 30 years, Christie was discovered by a photographer in Paris at the age of eighteen. Since then, she has become the first model to ever appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated for three consecutive years, and appeared in the publication?s annual Swimsuit Issues and television specials for years to follow.

?In 1976, CoverGirl gave Christie her first ?big break? in modeling with a contract, which launched the start of a 20-year partnership that marks the longest-running cosmetics contract of any model in history.

?Christie is known for her commitment to health and fitness. Christie wrote and illustrated a health and beauty book, Christie Brinkley?s Outdoor Beauty and Fitness Guide [1983], which topped The New York Times bestseller list.

?On the big screen, she made her acting debut in 1983 opposite Chevy Chase in the hit feature film National Lampoon?s Vacation and its 1997 sequel, Vegas Vacation. She has also famously appeared in Billy Joel?s classic music videos ?Uptown Girl,? ?Keeping the Faith,? and ?All About Soul,? as well as Mick Jones? music video ?Just Wanna Hold.?

?On television, Christie has appeared on NBC?s ?Mad About You? and hosted Lifetime Television?s ?InStyle Celebrity Weddings,? which became the highest-rated special in Lifetime?s history. She has also been featured in Vh1?s ?Pop Culture Icons? series. Christie has been the subject of many documentaries including the HBO program ?Beautiful Baby, Beautiful,? Lifetime?s ?Intimate Portrait,? and ?Barbara Walters? Oscar Night Special.?

?Christie is an active member and dedicated supporter/activist for many organizations including UNICEF?s Art and Entertainment Support Committee, Handgun Control, Ovarian Cancer, Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Cousteau Society, Southern Poverty Law, The Wilderness Society, and http://stopglobalwarming.org/.

?She currently lives in New York with two of her three children, Sailor Lee and Jack Paris. Her daughter, actress/singer Alexa Ray Joel, lives in New York City.?

The original Broadway production of Chicago earned ten 1976 Tony Award? nominations, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actor in a Musical (Jerry Orbach as Billy Flynn), Best Actress in a Musical (both Chita Rivera as Velma Kelly and Gwen Verdon as Roxie Hart), Best Direction of a Musical (Bob Fosse), and Best Choreography (Fosse). But it took home no Tonys.

By contrast, the 1996 Broadway revival of Chicago received eight 1997 Tony Award? nominations and won six Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical (Walter Bobbie), Best Choreography (Ann Reinking), Best Actor in a Musical (James Naughton as Billy Flynn), and Best Actress in a Musical (Bebe Neuwirth as Velma Kelly). It also won the 1997 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.

The vivacious 2002 motion-picture version of Chicago, directed by Rob Marshall, starred Renee Zellweger as Roxie Hart, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma Kelly, and Richard Gere as Billy Flynn. It received thirteen 2003 Academy Award? nominations and won six Oscars, including the awards for Best Picture and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Catherine Zeta-Jones).

The Durham Performing Arts Center also writes:

?Now in its 16th glorious year of girls, glitz, and glamour on the Great White Way, the record-breaking smash hit musical Chicago is now the fourth longest-running production in Broadway history.

?With a legendary book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Chicago is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording.

?Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media, and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago?s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today?s tabloids.

?Directed by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Tony Award winner Ann Reinking, Chicago features set design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by Tony Award winner William Ivey Long, lighting design by Tony Award winner Ken Billington, and sound design by Scott Lehrer.?

Commercial Real Estate Values Keep Rising..Different Assets ...

credit to Bendix Anderson

Prices keep rising for commercial real estate properties, according to indices kept by top real estate firms?but not as quickly as in the years just after the crash.

?There?s been a pause in the numbers,? said Jeffrey Havsy, director of research for the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries (NCREIF). ?People are waiting to see? We?ve had some economic uncertainty. Retail sales are sluggish.?

Top indices from NCREIF, Moody?s/Real Capital Analytics, the CoStar Group and Green Street Advisors all show a sharp, fast recovery in 2010 and 2011 from the real estate crash. However, the rise in prices is slowing for the most desirable properties in the safest markets. At the same time, some information shows that rising prices have spread to include more properties in more markets as the recovery widens.

Growth slows for institutional investments

Prices came roaring back in starting in 2010 for the institutional-quality investments tracked by NCREIF. Returns stayed above 3 percent every quarter in 2011, slipping to about 2.5 percent in the first quarter of 2012. Returns stayed in positive territory in the second quarter, but slipped again by a few basis points, according to NCREIF?s Preliminary Snapshot report on its Open-End Diversified Core Equity index.

The institutional-quality assets tracked by Green Street Advisors? Commercial Property Price Index have also slowed their rise. ?For the last year the Index has risen at a much more measured pace,? said Peter Rothemund, an analyst for Green Street. ?I call it drifting upwards.?

Early in the recovery, commercial real estate price rose quickly despite uncertain economic times, recovering value lost in the crash. But to continue to rise after a two years of recovery, we need to do better than the uncertainty we have been living with, according to Havsy.

Each quarter seems to bring some new reason for investors to keep their wallets in their pockets?from the Arab Spring to the European debt crisis to the U.S. debt ceiling debate, to the European debt crisis again.

Different assets, different values

But there are some differences between different indices. The Moody?s/Real Capital Analytics Commercial Price Property Indices show a sharp crash and recovery over the same period, but the recovery is not as strong. Prices for commercial properties are still down 21.5 percent from their peak during the boom, according to Moody?s/RCA. Over the three months the ended May 12, values inched up just 0.9 percent, according to a July 2012 update to the index.

In comparison, the Green Street?s CPPI shows real estate prices just 5 to 10 percent below their peak during the boom. ?Now they have recovered nearly all of that ground,? said Green Street?s Rothemund. ?We are in this super low interest rate environment. That is super good for property values.?

The difference depends largely on the assets in the Index. Green Street, for example, mostly tracks institutional-quality properties traded by real estate investment trusts, said Rothemund.

In contrast, the Moody?s/RCA index includes properties with commercial real estate loans packaged and sold as bonds rated by Moody?s. It?s a much wider universe of properties, ranging from class-A to class-D. The best-performing properties in the Moody?s/RCA index include office properties in central business districts in major markets, which ?started to recover 30 months ago and are now just about 5 percent below their peak,? according to Moody?s/RCA.

Less prime properties in less major markets still improved, but not as strongly. ?Major markets have outperformed non-major markets over the last one, three and 12 months,? according to the report. ?Due to persistent economic uncertainty, the flight to quality remains unabated.?

?Recovery widens,? according to CoStar

However, a wider recovery is taking root for commercial property values, according to the CoStar Commercial Repeat Sale Indices, kept by the CoStar Group.

Both components of CoStar?s equal-weighted U.S. Composite Index show positive gains in May 2012 over the year before ? both Investment Grade and General Commercial. That?s ?an indication that the recovery in property pricing is reaching across all size and quality dimensions of the commercial real estate sector,? according to CoStar.

Swimming robot to help future Olympians

13 hrs.

Japanese researchers are building a human-like robotic swimmer that could help athletes swim faster, or at least wear speedier swimsuits.

Among other things, the Swumanoid will give researchers insight into the propulsive force created by a swimmer?s hands, which is difficult to gauge with sensors on an actual human, Motomu Nakashima from the Tokyo Institute of Technology told the video news website Diginfo TV.?

The robot is modeled after a competitive swimmer, built to half scale. Waterproof motors reproduce swimming motions. It currently swims about three times slower than the?current 100-meter freestyle record-holder,?Brazilian Cesar Cielo.?

Nakashima said the robot will find use in sports research. It might also serve as a rescue robot. Given other developments on the robot lifeguard front, it?s beginning to look like a favorite summer job is about to be automated.

Researchers find new way to kill breast cancer cells | Cancer Kick

Researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center have found that a cancer gene linked to aggressive spread of the disease promotes breast cancer stem cells. The finding implies a new way to target the behavior of these lethal cells.

The finding involves the cancer gene RhoC, which has previously been shown to promote metastasis of many types of cancer. RhoC levels increase as breast cancer progresses and high levels of RhoC are associated with worse patient survival.

Cancer stem cells are the small number of cells within a tumor that are believed to fuel the tumor?s growth and spread. Researchers believe traditional chemotherapy and radiation treatments often become ineffective because they do not kill the cancer stem cells, and that the key to future treatments is to develop drugs that target and kill these cells.

This new study, which appears online in PLoS ONE, suggests a new way to get at the cancer stem cells.

?Targeting the specific molecular cogs driving the cancer stem cell machinery responsible for the cancer spreading has potential for future treatments. Eliminating cancer stem cells may ultimately be necessary to cure certain cancers, but in the meantime, we may be able to manage the cancer stem cell population and the invasive behaviors of these cells by disrupting the molecular machinery, using RhoC as a target,? says senior study author Sofia D. Merajver, M.D., Ph.D., professor of internal medicine and epidemiology at the University of Michigan and scientific director of the breast oncology program at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The researchers looked at breast cancer cell lines that were highly metastatic and cell lines from normal breast tissue. By inhibiting or overexpressing RhoC, they found that RhoC expression is necessary to cause metastasis in both cell lines, and that RhoC overexpression alone can cause metastasis. The researchers also tested this in mice and had similar results.

Merajver?s lab, in conjunction with other U-M researchers, is studying a novel small molecule drug to inhibit RhoC, which has shown promising initial results in the laboratory. The researchers are continuing to develop this inhibitor, which will require several years of additional testing in the laboratory before potentially advancing to clinical trials.

Breast cancer statistics: 229,060 Americans will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and 39,920 will die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.

This New Test Could Reveal Your Cat's Ancestry | Pawesome ...

Bowie cat

For one of my first posts for Pawesome, I wrote about DNA My Dog, an Ontario-based business that does genetic testing on dogs to help breakdown their breed profile. Now cat lovers may be able to enjoy a similar service, thanks to work done by a geneticist at the University of California.

Leslie Lyons, head of UC?s Lyons Feline Genetics Laboratory, says she has developed a test that can determine if your cat?s parents or grandparents were one of the 29 ?major fancy breeds? of cats. She offers the testing by mail for about $120. Here?s how it works:

Lyons? lab isolates the DNA from the swab and tests for specific markers (single nucleotide polymorphisms), which it then uses to generate a profile. This is compared to a database of global cat profiles to see which race it shares the most variants with ? the eight regions that mixed or ?random bred? cats (the most common type) originate from are Western Europe, South Asia, Egypt, Eastern Mediterranean, Arabian Sea, Iran/Iraq, India and East Asia (most breeds hail from the first four locations). Lyons collected most of the cat samples for the database while attending cat shows hosted by the Cat Fanciers? Association (CFA), The International Cat Association (TICA) and others around the globe.

However, if your cat is truly randomly bred, you may not get accurate results or a match to a particular breed. As well, cats outside the United States have heritages that will be harder to trace. On the plus side, if you?ve got a alpaca or yak at home, Lyons? lab will test the genetic heritage of those too.

Tories teach Labour a lesson in education | Your Thurrock

IT WAS an ?A plus? to the Conservative group on Wednesday when they delivered a number of first class (with honours) lessons to the ruling Labour group on education.

Portfolio holder, cllr Oliver Gerrish had proposed a motion which objected to change to the present GCSE system.

But over the next twenty minutes, the Tories managed to make a number of salient points that left may have left the Cambridge graduate being graded: ?Could do better.?

The Tory argument was very much based on congratulating Thurrock schools on their improvements but then raising the concern that, as shadow portfolio holder, cllr James Halden said: ?There is clearly a contradiction in that, exam results are going up but our position in international tables seem to be going down.?

Cllr Gerrish was concerned at returning to system where students from an early age were pigeon-holed.

He said: ?We have a real system of flexibility now and I would be worried at returning to a system where you have no room to imprive from the age of 14.?

The crux of the Tories argument was made by Fobbing councillor Mark Coxshall. He said: ?We want an education system that encourages social mobility.

?We want to see people from all schools on the front benches and not just Eton etc.?

The Conservatives continued their assault by making reference to the academy system.

Cllr Halden said: ?We do not want to see a race to the bottom. Or a system where it is teaching to the exam. I was educated in Thurrock and am very proud of that.

?As shadow spokesperson for education, I will strive for the best educational system possible for our students.?

Cllr Gerrish, now under sustained attack was defended by cllr Barbara Rice who made reference to the many achievements of his administration, however, the Tories asserted that he was answering a question that was not on the exam paper!

Cllr Lynn Worrall attacked the Tories. She said: ?My son got to university (Brunel) because of the system we now have. he would have found it much harder under the old GCE/CSE system.?

It was the waspish but perceptive humour of Orsett councillor Mike Revell that finally secured the honours.

Cllr Revell said: ?If cllr Gerrish was organising an event in the Olympics such as the hop, skip and jump. He would have the hop on one day, the skip, the next and after another days rest, the jump.?

But as a learned man such as cllr Revell knows, democracy is often viewed as the second best form of government.

The motion, supporting cllr Gerrish was passed.

5 Home-Based Business Software Needs

As a self-employed person working out of my home, I?ve bought a ton of software applications. Most proved unnecessary while a few applications proved to be invaluable.

The following is a list of my 5 favorite business software applications for running my home business:

1. Microsoft Office

I know I?ll take some heat for this one, but I like Microsoft office. Yes, it?s expensive. Yes, there are free alternatives such as Google Docs and Open Office. However, I?m accustomed to MS Office, especially Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. I use all 4 daily and like them.

2. Web-Based Back-Up Software

About 2 years ago my laptop crashed and burned. The data was not recoverable. I lost a ton of information. And no, I had not backed up my data.

As soon as I bought my new laptop, I signed up for an online web-based data backup service. I knew from experience that I would not take the time to manually back up my files onto a CD, hard drive or DVD. Therefore, a web-based back-up service is ideal.

The service I use backs up my data automatically every day. All my data is stored on their server which means I don?t have to worry about it. If my current laptop crashes and burns, I just have to download all my data on a new computer.

3. Anti-virus software

I?ve always used anti-virus software so I?m not sure what would happen to a computer without it. If you run a business, and much of your business is on your computer, anti-virus software is critically important.

4. Website Software

Home Based BusinessesSome home-business operators rely on a website designer for the website. Not me. I build and run my own website using WordPress. I love WordPress, but it?s no the only game in town. The important thing, in my view, if you?re starting out and have limited resources and need new business, is to get website building software.

There?s very simple-to-use online website builders, WordPress, and Joomla ? all three of which anyone can learn to use and build a great website fairly quickly.

I blog regularly for my business so having blogging-based website software is invaluable. Whether it?s a small brochure site or a large and dynamic site, most small businesses need a site and being able to add content and manage the site is a terrific thing for any small business owner to know.

Even if you don?t want the hassle of dealing with your own site, if you know what?s involved, it?s much easier hiring the right people to take care of it for you.

5. Fireworks or Photoshop by Adobe

If you do any work with images for marketing purposes, having Fireworks and/or Photoshop is a wonderful software asset. Almost every day I go into one or the other to tweak images used in my online marketing. They?re also terrific for creating free guide covers as informational give-aways which any business can do to generate leads.

Again, you can hire people to handle images for marketing, but once you know the basics, it?s easy to tweak your own images to come up with basic marketing images. It?s fast and costs nothing. I?m not saying not to hire pros for more complex work, but being able to deal with your own images for your own website and some marketing materials can save you a ton of time and money in the long run. Plus, it?s fun and can be used for personal images as well.

No business is the same; therefore each business may have unique software needs. Moreover, each business owner is unique and therefore software needs may vary.

Industry-specific software

For example, in some industries, there is industry-specific software to help manage businesses. There?s fitness center software, law firm management software, medical practice software, etc. If you?re in an industry that has specifically designed software, it may be worthwhile investing in a robust software application to run your business.

Bookkeeping software

If you do your own books, you might want bookkeeping software to save time and money. I use spreadsheets to track my revenue and expenses and then provide that data to an accountant. Therefore I don?t use bookkeeping software, but I?m sure it could be handy for me if I were inclined to learn it.

Communications software

I never took to Skype. I have an account, but don?t use it much (only when the other person needs to use Skype). However, more and more business owners are relying on Skype-type communications software to handle communications needs. If you spend a great deal of time communicating and your cell phone bills are huge, Skype could be a good solution.

Voice Recognition software

I?m fairly impressed with the voice recognition software that?s included with Windows 7. I?ve used it somewhat; although I prefer typing (I type fast and tend to think better typing out of habit). However, if you need to generate a lot of the written word and your typing isn?t up to speed, voice recognition software may be the answer. It takes time to learn and train the software, but many people these days are able to get a lot more done with it.

Why did I split up this article into 2 parts?

Because the first 5 suggested software applications for home-based businesses is the actual software I have and use. The following 4 suggestions may be worthwhile, but I don?t have any of it.

There?s certainly a lot more types of software out there. I?ve bought plenty of it. However, when resources are tight, it?s important to buy only that which actually moves your business forward. A lot of software is more a distraction than a productivity tool.

Therefore, assess each software before purchase with a mind toward whether it will actually make you and your business more productive or simply be a waste of time and money.

Detection of the greenhouse gas methane in the Arctic

A team of scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association (AWI) and the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences has just completed an airborne measurement campaign that allowed for the first time to measure large-scale methane emissions from the extensive Arctic permafrost landscapes. The study area extended from Barrow, the northernmost settlement on the American mainland, across the entire North Slope of Alaska, to the Mackenzie Delta in the Northwest Territories of Canada. The airborne measurements (Airborne Measurement of Methane - AIRMETH) at a flight level of only 30 to 50 meters above ground addresses two major questions: How much methane is emitted from permafrost areas into the atmosphere? Do well known geological point sources, i.e. the leakage of gas along geologic faults, contribute significantly to the total amount or does the microbially produced methane from the upper soil layers dominate?

"First of all, with these measurements we can quantify the current emis-sions and establish baseline data. On this basis, potential future climate-related changes can be determined. In addition, our data will help to better understand the still incompletely explored carbon cycle in the Arctic", said the GFZ scientist Torsten Sachs, head of the campaign.

In order to clarify the exact relationship between older geogenic and younger biogenic methane, isotope analysis would be required. In the Mackenzie Delta, however, the location of some geological sources is well known, so that selective measurements in the immediate surroundings allow conclusions about their contribution to the total emissions. In 2002, the GFZ was already involved here in a scientific drilling program for methane hydrate research. Covered by a 600 meter thick permafrost layer, this region stores unusually highly enriched methane hydrate reservoirs. These are currently considered the world's most significant accumulations under permafrost conditions.

The research aircraft Polar 5 of the Alfred Wegener Institute served as platform for the measurements. The machine of type Basler BT-67 was fitted with a meteorological nose boom, which includes a 5-hole probe to determine the 3D wind vector and temperature and humidity sensors. Via an intake on the roof of the airplane, air was also sucked into the cabin and examined with a fast methane analyser.

An initial screening of the results showed the need for the aircraft for the vast tundra areas: "By using the plane we have measured considerable regional differences in the methane concentration. This finding is new and important: on the one hand because the point measurements on ground stations have not yielded a very detailed and representative picture of the region. On the other hand because it showed that with the airborne measurements, we can close a data gap between the ground measurements and the available satellite data", says atmospheric researcher Dr. Joerg Hartmann from the Alfred Wegener Institute.

In a next step, the data will be analyzed in detail and the detected atmospheric flow processes will be integrated in computer models. The Alfred Wegener Institute is one of the world's leading science institutions in terms of permafrost and atmospheric research. Its scientists work both in the Russian tundra, on Svalbard and in the northern regions of Canada and the United States. As the national research centre for geosciences, the GFZ explores "System Earth" worldwide, with the geological, physical, chemical and biological processes that occur in the Earth's interior and on the surface. Both research institutions are Helmholtz centres.
