Five Top Tips For Weight Losing And Good Health | Food And Drink

The reason diet books are so popular is plain for all to see: we look and feel better when we lose weight. By comparison, choosing which advice to take seems like rocket science, with so many diets claiming to be the magic bullet to achieving the desired goals. If consistently adhered to, the following basic tips will provide a path towards successful weight losing.

The range of low fat options on the market is superb. With slight adjustment, meals that were once literally off the menu in terms of high fat content can be considered as healthy. Low fat cheese on a pizza with fresh prawns, peppers and chili certainly fares well in the fat stakes, compared to say for example a full fat meat feast pizza.

Good habits are formed from an early age and people tend to follow the dietary example set by their parents. Not of all these habits unfortunately were great, particularly if the parents were brought up in times when people tended to eat whatever they were given and were thankful for it. However, simple habits like avoiding fried food of any kind and switching to baked or steamed alternatives can have great benefits in terms of reduced fat and also in retaining the nutritional goodness of the food itself.

Carbohydrates may be low in fat, but when an excess is received by the body it converts them to fat for stored energy. Cutting down on these is beneficial in terms of weight loss, hence the popularity of low carbohydrate diets. Many of these diets recommend increasing the consumption of more satisfying proteins to keep hunger at bay.

Many of us will be straight into the pot for another portion, even before we have had time to digest the first helping. Part of this is caused by the fact that the brain has not had time to realize that the stomach is actually full. Try to get into the habit of only allowing one measured portion at each meal. Opting for smaller plates and bowls might also help in tricking the mind into thinking that there is more in front of you than there actually is.

With all the effort of watching what we eat, it is inevitable that sometimes temptation will get in the way of even the best of intentions. Its good to fill those danger moments with healthy foods rather than bad ones. A salad or a piece of fruit for example, can keep hunger at bay whilst you are cooking a meal on arriving home from work. Its better than filling up on chips and dips which are high in fat and low in nutritional content.

A really quick way to losing weight is to combine diet with exercise. Choosing a regular exercise regime should incorporate three half hour sessions of aerobic exercise per week to ensure that the metabolic rate is increased. This will help burn calories even after the exercising is over.

Following these simple tips will have great effect in terms of securing the weight losing goals you are out to achieve. Not only that, you will look better on the outside and feel great on the inside. Now that is a recipe for success.

Brains and Eggs: School finance bill may be passed in dead of ...

The TexTrib provides the explanation:
The 2012-13 budget has been approved by both the House and the Senate, and now, with less than two days left in the legislative session, lawmakers have to pay for it by passing one more piece of legislation that raises $3.5 billion in "non-tax revenue" and revises school finance law to allow the state to reduce aid to public schools by $4 billion.

Without that legislation ? SB 1811 ? the budget doesn't balance and lawmakers will be forced to come back in a special session to deal with the issue. ...

If SB 1811 doesn't pass and the budget doesn't balance, lawmakers have to fix it before September 1, when the current budget ends and the new one is supposed to take effect. The budget, approved on Saturday along mostly partisan lines in both the House and the Senate, is $15.2 billion smaller than the current budget, doesn't require major new taxes and doesn't immediately require the state to use its Rainy Day Fund. Budget writers left $4.8 billion in Medicaid spending out of the budget in the hope that economic and program changes will make it unnecessary, but left money in the Rainy Day Fund to cover that spending if needed in 2013.

Without SB 1811, it doesn't balance.

At the time of this posting, Postcards is reporting that SB 1811 is scheduled to come before the House in about an hour, and the Senate some time after 9 p.m. Harvey Kronberg has the insight:
Should a school finance plan that was only revealed yesterday, has never had a hearing, has never had any questions asked about it or any public vetting be passed in the dead of night when members are exhausted? Do Republicans have any clearer understanding of what the bill does than do Democrats?

Sure, Democrats could chub the bill. Sure, Republicans could call the previous question.

But there is something larger at stake. This is the first school finance plan passed in modern times absent a court order. It could have profound consequences to real people. It could also end political careers. It deserves more than a ten minute question and answer period. ...

Republicans obviously have the cards to do whatever they want. If they want to pass a school finance plan under under those conditions and only ten minutes of questions, they also bear all the responsibility.

When those who went to the polls just seven months ago voted a straight Republican ticket, they created the atmosphere for this perfect storm. It's not hyperbole to say that what happened earlier this month in Tuscaloosa, AL and Joplin, MO doesn't really hold a candle to the damage this budget will wreak on the lives of Texans. Yes, there will be hundred of lives lost as a result of the financial decisions the Republican super-majorities are making. The only real difference is that the carnage in Texas will be in slow motion, and the tornado-ravaged cities are already on the road to recovery.

Texas won't recover for a generation. Or longer.

Update from HK:

May 29, 2011 7:32 PM
IF SB 1811 FAILS, GOVERNOR WILL PUT SANCTUARY CITIES AND MORE ON THE CALL

Special will be called for Tuesday, May 31

As Senate Democrats consider whether or not to filibuster the must pass SB 1811, reliable sources close to the Governor?s office tell QR that there will be direct and immediate consequences.

Should SB 1811 go down, Governor Rick Perry will call what is expected to be a very quick special session to convene this coming Tuesday, May 31. In addition to SB 1811, the Governor will add ?sanctuary cities and other matters related to immigration on to the call.?

With no blocker bill, passage of legislation in the Senate requires only 16 votes.

Buying Customer Goodwill, And Keeping It|News and Society Site

Saturday, May 28th, 2011 | General

Anyone who runs a affair knows including the intention of customers are among its most vital assets. And flush if customers cannot be bought or sold, their presumed constancy is a foremost implication in near each fusion.

So, as AT&T stanch to buy T-changeable USA early Deustche Telekom for $39 billion this week, T-changeable?s consumer dishonest was built-in in the fee. But AT&T is inane to be inflicted including to tread sensibly if it desires to care for the consumer friendliness it is purchasing.

The acquisition presents a fastidious conundrum in check over of the fact including the intention of of the uncommon frequencies ancient by the two companies to grant benefit for Internet-enabled smart phones. Including the take care of business is finalized, AT&T diplomacy to reconfigure T-changeable?s void 3G towers so they can as a substitution for grant closer 4G benefit, which AT&T has vigorously rolled out obliquely its void arrangement. The consequence will be a greatly better vicinity in which customers can hear 4G signals.

The drawback is including the intention of contemporary T-changeable 3G smart phones will be powerless to use the new infrastructure. Approximately calculate ago the towers are converted, persons T-changeable phones, approximately of which are soothe new, will be converted into abruptly obsolete. Including the T-changeable infrastructure dismantled, AT&T will be inflicted including no way to distinction the promises T-changeable through to grant benefit for persons phones.

Wireless companies fund the deprivation of most phones, above all distinguished-powered, Internet-enabled 3G and 4G models, and at that calculate get on to up for the early outlays finished the way of the benefit contracts they demand customers to infiltrate. This earnings including the intention of if the new AT&T allowable T-changeable customers to austerely swap out their phones for AT&T water supply-matched ones, at the ordinary fee, the companionship would expose subsidizing phones and at that calculate having contracts end before it recouped its cash. If, on the additional hand, AT&T tacked new contracts on the new phones, customers would be blocked including a carrier they may by no means be inflicted including sought after. AT&T force for the interim care for the customers, but it doubtless wouldn?t get greatly lingering-stretch friendliness early them.

Here may not be any exact solutions to this conundrum, but here are approximately look excellent including the intention of would handle in cooperation sides moderately positively.

T-changeable customers whose 3G phones no longer bring about may maybe austerely be allowable to terminate their contracts. They may maybe at that calculate buy new phones and infiltrate new contracts, any including AT&T or including a additional carrier, such as Verizon or the greatly less vital Gallop. The new carrier would fund the deprivation of the new buzz and be pleased including a full narrow stretch. Customers force be aggravated to be inflicted including their contracts recommend itself to such an hasty end, but they would at nominal amount be competent to choose their carrier enthusiastically.

On the additional hand, customers may maybe be allowable to close out their T-changeable contracts by AT&T phones not subsidized by the companionship. They force, for develop, be competent to buy ancient AT&T 3G phones, which will liable flood the promote as contemporary AT&T users upgrade to 4G. Or they may maybe be inflicted including an chance to buy new phones at full deprivation. This would yield customers the chance to exact their contracts, even if persons not attracted in renewing including AT&T would be out the deprivation of the new phones.

In actuality, calculate may grant a third key ? one including the intention of is fairer, but including the intention of delays movement for all. Before any towers can be converted, the take care of business must be finalized, and before including the intention of can pocket house, regulators must yield their praise. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., the older Democrat on the Household exchanges subcommittee including the intention of will inspect the take care of business, has by now hard-pressed the evenhandedness Department and the FCC to ?sensibly inspect the projected transaction.?(1) Flush barring unanticipated call-ups, the take care of business is not probable to accurate for nearly a time. Ralph de la Vega, AT&T?s have control finished of wireless and consumer air force, told The Associated Get behind including the intention of the tower conversion administer, too, will most liable pocket numerous being.(2)

In check over of the fact including the intention of the ordinary part for part buzz contracts is two being, all of T-changeable?s contemporary contracts may end up expiring before T-changeable 3G benefit goes offline. De la Vega understood the transition to the new phones will liable pocket house as part of the run of the mill end-of-benefit-stretch upgrade administer. As their T-changeable contracts expire, customers will be competent to choose whether or not to buy a new AT&T buzz and infiltrate into a narrow for benefit. Meanwhile, AT&T?s contemporary customers will be inflicted including to pass the time before they can pocket financial help of the wider 4G coverage the acquisition is projected to bring them.

Regardless of as or how the conversion happens, AT&T stands to advance loads of new customers. Whether it keeps most of them for the lingering stretch depends, as it must for any affair, on how greatly it makes them believe salutation.

In South Africa's black townships, being gay can be fatal

Noxolo Nogwaza died because she dressed like a man and wasn't afraid of anyone, friends and backers in Kwa-Thema say, one of the latest of a series of brutal rapes and killings of black lesbian women

By Robyn Dixon, Los Angeles Times
7:35 PM PDT, May 27, 2011
Reporting from Kwa-Them

A feather of acrid smoke drifts across an open drain choked with bulrushes and plastic bottles beside a muddy lane. It's a forlorn place that will always belong to Noxolo Nogwaza. This is her murder scene.

The thick smoke, from a fire kindled by a traditional healer, covers the faces of those who have come to grieve, bringing new tears. Noxolo's aunt, Nonyaniso Nogwaza, knows that she is here, somewhere, beyond the smoke that will bleach out the evil that still lurks.

Noxolo died because she dressed like a man and wasn't afraid of anyone, friends and supporters in this township say, one of the latest of a series of brutal rapes and killings of black lesbian women that has stunned this country. South Africa, an avowedly tolerant "rainbow nation," is one of the few in the world allowing gay marriage.

In one particularly appalling case this month, a 13-year-old girl was gang-raped because of her sexual orientation, according to South Africa's Justice Department.

Noxolo's name means peace. She loved soccer and Kwaito music, a kind of hip-hop, and grew up hanging around boys and behaving like one. The 24-year-old lived with her grandmother and her closest confidant was her aunt, Nonyaniso. The two never spoke about Noxolo's sexuality; it wasn't necessary.

"I knew about it, the way she was acting. She didn't tell me exactly, but I saw. The way she dressed and the way she liked to associate with guys. She dressed like a guy."

Noxolo left the Bar Lounge in this township east of Johannesburg in the early hours of Easter, April 24. She was attacked in a lane behind a supermarket, about 50 yards from a group of houses. She was raped with a broken bottle, repeatedly stabbed with broken glass and battered with bricks. Her teeth were knocked out and her head partially crushed by a cinder block.

"I don't want to cry. I'm not going to cry," Nonyaniso says, remembering her niece's body, stripped of dignity. But the tears escape. "They killed her like a dog, like an animal. She was so wonderful. I lost a friend. I lost a sister."

Nonyaniso used to buy her niece men's clothing. Now she is taking care Noxolo's two children, Lindiwe, a 4-year-old girl, and Sipho, a 7-year-old boy.

South Africa has a liberal constitution promising equal rights for all, and cosmopolitan Cape Town has a thriving gay scene. But for black lesbians living in urban townships, it's little better than in many other countries on a homophobic continent.

In a society that is deeply religious, traditional and highly patriarchal, lesbians and gay men contradict the dominant view of African manhood.

Across Africa, gay people are threatened, humiliated, raped, beaten, killed, jailed, outed in front-page newspaper stories, condemned by preachers as un-Christian and by politicians and traditional leaders as un-African.

In Uganda, a measure setting forth the death penalty for homosexuality was proposed, but recently that penalty was dropped from the bill, which is yet to go to the parliament.

In South African townships there's a crime dubbed "corrective rape," rape to "cure" lesbians, and sometimes gay men and transsexuals. They are told they are being taught a lesson: how to be a real woman or man, survivors say.

"They say, 'We'll sort you out. At the end of the day, you are a woman. You have to find a man.' They feel that being gay is not African and we are bringing another culture to the community," says Ntsupe Mohapi, 38, a gay activist in Kwa-Thema who has been threatened and taunted, but not attacked.

Besides Noxolo, two other openly gay women have been killed in Kwa-Thema since 2008. All played soccer as well as, or better than, most men. All of them dressed in a masculine style.

"Homosexuality is seen as an import from the West. We are seen as betrayers of culture and betrayers of tradition ? some kind of imperialistic force that is attacking the African way of life," says Fikile Vilakazi of the Coalition of African Lesbians. The group's Western funding reinforces suspicions.

Surrounded by stretches of dry grassland and factories, Kwa-Thema's streets echo with car horns and music. Unemployed people walk aimlessly, in seeming slow motion. A graffitied rock urges people to "PRAY NOW." A dilapidated factory has been converted into a church. A man sits on an upturned bucket, selling bananas. Girls in tight tops, miniskirts and leggings trail about the streets. Vast liquor warehouses serve the poor.

For years, Mohapi says, the township was so tolerant of homosexuals that gay people moved from other parts of the country to live here.

"The history here was that gays and lesbians were not afraid," says Mohapi, who wears a cap and jeans with fashionable holes. She was raised in an extremely religious family and suppressed her sexuality until she was 20, fearing her parents' reaction. She moved out of her family home and wrote her mother a letter, explaining. The two never speak of it, although they are very close.

"We used to gather at Three One, or Thoko's place," she says, referring to two private houses where gay people were welcome. "It was mostly about fashion, laughing, drinking and dating. That's where you would find a partner."

It's not clear why Kwa-Thema's tolerance evaporated. Vilakazi says there's been a backlash against South Africa's liberal post-apartheid constitution among traditional leaders, conservative elements of the ruling African National Congress and some members of the community.

Muntu Masombuka, 28, is a gay man living in Kwa-Thema. In 2006, he was walking home from church when three burly men attacked. They dragged him into a house, stripped him, tied him up, beat him and raped him.

"They said if I am a woman, they will show me what men do to women. They said, 'Boys don't walk like that.' My mind was shut down. I cried until I couldn't cry any more. I went home naked."

He knew his attackers, but says police refused to accept his report of rape.

"They said, 'How can they rape you if you are a man? You should have fought back as a man.' They said, 'Come and listen to this boy. He says he's been raped. How can you be raped if you are a man?' I was furious, because they were humiliating me."

He sometimes sees his attackers in Kwa-Thema. "If I see them I run away, or change directions."

Noxolo and the other two lesbians killed in the township were slain during the period from April into June, as the nights got colder in the Southern Hemisphere and the wood fire smoke hung low.

In April 2008, soccer star Eudy Simelane, 31, an openly gay woman who had played on the women's national soccer team, Banyana Banyana (The Girls, The Girls), was gang-raped, stabbed repeatedly in the neck, stomach and thighs and killed in what human rights and gay activists said was a hate crime.

She had loved playing with a ball as a toddler, and from early childhood kicked a soccer ball around the streets with the township boys. One of the few photographs of her shows her with cropped red hair, wearing a No. 13 jersey.

Girlie "S'Gelane" Nkosi, 37, who played soccer with Simelane on a local team, the Tsakane Ladies, was stabbed in the back in a Kwa-Thema nightclub in June 2009. Nkosi, according to her memorial program, was "arguably the most visible lesbian of Kwa-Thema," a fighter and a campaigner who spoke out against hate crimes against gays and lesbians.

Police and judges have been slow to link the killings of the openly gay women to their sexual identity, activists charge. The judge in the trial of Simelane's killers did not make the connection, saying instead that she was killed because she knew her attackers.

Like most black women who live openly as lesbians, Mohapi, the activist, is often taunted on the streets by groups of men. A day or two later, she makes a point of visiting the homes of the ones she knows, trying to educate them about homosexuality.

"I tell them there's no choice. It's like being black. I tell them that hate speech leads to hate crime: You might just talk, but others might take it seriously and kill me."

"They say, 'Can't you change? Or just lie low and don't show yourself in public?' I say, 'No, because I'm fighting for the next generation. If I stay quiet, it will go on forever.'"

She does it even though she's afraid she will be killed one day.

Noxolo's aunt, Nonyaniso, visited her grave the day after the cleansing ceremony to speak to her. She knelt in the dirt, imploring her niece not to give up.

"I just bowed down and talked to her, praying and praying that Noxolo must fight. She mustn't just relax. She must show who killed her. I'm waiting for a dream. Maybe she will come in a dream. But she's quiet."

Unemployed, selling clothing from her home to scrape money together, she has little for her own 9-year-old and worries how she will pay the school fees for her niece's children, born of brief previous relationships with two men.

Noxolo's son, Sipho, knows that his mother died. Lindiwe, the little girl, thinks she is visiting friends and will be back.

But when they are old enough, Nonyaniso will tell the children how their mother was killed. She will tell them why.

Learn Digital Photography ? Keep the Fun Factor in Your ...

Photography should always be fun and if yours isn?t then you have a problem. It?s no longer a hobby or a pastime and the question I would ask is, ?Why are you doing it??. What?s the purpose of investing time and money in something if you aren?t getting anything out of it. If your photography has reached this point then do something about it. Here are my suggestions for putting fun back into your photography.

1. Make sure that you know what you are doing

Many amateurs reach a frustration point in their photography because they have reached the level of their own incompetence and can?t get past it. This was known in the business world as the Peter Principle. Unless you find a way to get passed this point the fun will disappear. You?ll see the images you want to take but your ability won?t take you there. So, what?s the answer? Find a way to learn to be more creative and acquire the technical skills needed to get you there. Basically, all this means is that you need to find a way of learning more i.e. buying a book, subscribing to a magazine, signing up for a class or taking an online course. You will be inspired by others and at the same time learn to take your photography to the next level.

2. Don?t wait for inspiration

If you wait to be inspired, you will wait to be inspired and thereby achieve a whole lot less than you could. There is nothing creative about waiting for the right moment. The right moment will arrive as you are shooting images not as you are waiting to shoot.

3. Just do it

Many of us wait for the moment, the perfect situation or the right time to take photos. We want a whole bunch of factors to be just right before we press the shutter button. But in the words of Nike, ?just do it!? To have fun with your photography you have to get out and take photos. Once you?ve determined to do this the fun can begin.

4. Plan for success

I use a number of exercises with my students to get the creative juices flowing. The first is shooting a theme, whether it be colour, old doors and windows or animals. Focus on a theme and shoot it. The next is to shoot an object in a hundred different ways so that each image is different. And, the third is using the alphabet. Find an object or subject that begins with each letter of the alphabet. So, planning before you shoot and trying one of these exercises will guarantee to get those creative juices flowing.

5. Have fun

Be prepared to try new things and experiment with your photography. Try new things you?ve never done before. Push the boundaries and think outside of the box. If you like old cars or flowers then shoot lots of them. If you shoot the things you love you are guaranteed to have fun.

Fun means different things to different people so find out what you enjoy doing and include it in your photography. The bottom line is to enjoy your photography. Happy shooting!

UCLA study - Health, medical, and science updates, fitness ...

For decades, autism researchers have faced a baffling riddle: how to unravel a disorder that leaves no known physical trace as it develops in the brain.

Now a UCLA study is the first to reveal how the disorder makes its mark at the molecular level, resulting in an autistic brain that differs dramatically in structure from a healthy one. Published May 25 in the advance online edition of Nature, the findings provide new insight into how genes and proteins go awry in autism to alter the mind.

The discovery also identifies a new line of attack for researchers, who currently face a vast array of potential fronts for tackling the neurological disease and identifying its diverse causes.

?If you randomly pick 20 people with autism, the cause of each person?s disease will be unique,? said principal investigator Dr. Daniel Geschwind, the Gordon and Virginia MacDonald Distinguished Chair in Human Genetics and a professor of neurology and psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. ?Yet when we examined how genes and proteins interact in autistic people?s brains, we saw well-defined shared patterns. This common thread could hold the key to pinpointing the disorder?s origins.?

The research team, led by Geschwind, included scientists from the University of Toronto and King?s College London. They compared brain tissue samples obtained after death from 19 autism patients and 17 healthy volunteers. After profiling three brain areas previously linked to autism, the group zeroed in on the cerebral cortex, the most evolved part of the human brain.

The researchers focused on gene expression ? how a gene?s DNA sequence is copied into RNA, which directs the synthesis of cellular molecules called proteins. Each protein is assigned a specific task by the gene to perform in the cell.

By measuring gene-expression levels in the cerebral cortex, the team uncovered consistent differences in how genes in autistic and healthy brains encode information.

?We were surprised to see similar gene expression patterns in most of the autistic brains we studied,? said first author Irina Voineagu, a UCLA postdoctoral fellow in neurology. ?From a molecular perspective, half of these brains shared a common genetic signature. Given autism?s numerous causes, this was an unexpected and exciting finding.?

The researchers? next step was to identify the common patterns. To do this, they looked at the cerebral cortex?s frontal lobe, which plays a role in judgment, creativity, emotions and speech, and at its temporal lobes, which regulate hearing, language and the processing and interpreting of sounds.

When the scientists compared the frontal and temporal lobes in the healthy brains, they saw that more than 500 genes were expressed at different levels in the two regions.

In the autistic brains, these differences were virtually non-existent.

?In a healthy brain, hundreds of genes behave differently from region to region, and the frontal and temporal lobes are easy to tell apart,? Geschwind said. ?We didn?t see this in the autistic brain. Instead, the frontal lobe closely resembles the temporal lobe. Most of the features that normally distinguish the two regions had disappeared.?

Two other clear-cut patterns emerged when the scientists compared the autistic and healthy brains. First, the autistic brain showed a drop in the levels of genes responsible for neuron function and communication. Second, the autistic brain displayed a jump in the levels of genes involved in immune function and inflammatory response.

?Several of the genes that cropped up in these shared patterns were previously linked to autism,? said Geschwind. ?By demonstrating that this pathology is passed from the genes to the RNA to the cellular proteins, we provide evidence that the common molecular changes in neuron function and communication are a cause, not an effect, of the disease.?

The next step will be for the research team to expand its search for the genetic and related causes of autism to other regions of the brain.

Autism is a complex brain disorder that strikes in early childhood. The disease disrupts a child?s ability to communicate and develop social relationships and is often accompanied by acute behavioral challenges. In the United States, autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 110 children ? and one in 70 boys. Diagnoses have expanded tenfold in the last decade.

###

The study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Genome Canada. Tissue samples were provided by the Autism Tissue Project, the Harvard Brain Bank and the Medical Research Council?s London Brain Bank for Neurodegenerative Disease.

Geschwind?s and Voineagu?s co-authors included Jennifer Lowe, Yuan Tian, Steve Horvath, Jonathan Mill and Rita Cantor of UCLA; Benjamin Blencowe and Xinchen Wang of the University of Toronto; and Patrick Johnston of King?s College London.

2011 WSBK Miller Motorsports Park Press Release Previews Pt 2: Vermeulen Missing Miller

Three more press release previews from the World Superbike teams prior to this weekend's Miller Motorsports Park round, from Althea Ducati, Alstare Suzuki and Kawasaki. The Kawasaki release contains details of Chris Vermeulen's decision to withdraw from the Miller round of WSBK round, and allow more time for the elbow he damaged at Monza to heal. Here are the releases:

CARLOS CHECA (ALTHEA RACING) KEEN TO RETURN TO FAVOURITE TRACK MILLER FOR WORLD SBK ROUND 5

Miller Motorsports Park (USA), Wednesday 25th May 2011: The Althea Racing team departs for Salt Lake City tomorrow for the fifth round of the World Superbike Championship, to take place on Monday 1st June at the Miller Motorsports Park.

As in recent years the USA round takes place on the American "Memorial Day" holiday and is the second of just two non-European events to feature on the 2011 SBK calendar.

One of Carlos' preferred tracks, the Spanish rider scored a double win at Miller Motorsports Park in 2008 and would surely have done the same again last year had it not been for technical difficulties. With four wins over the eight races run so far this season, Checa and his team are confident that Salt Lake City can be the setting for two strong race results.

Carlos Checa

"Miller is a track that suits me very well; it is perhaps the best track for me and my riding style. I'd say that, seeing how both I and my bike are performing right now, that we will be able to adapt well to the track this year. We'll see which tyres are made available and work to find the best combination ? I'm feeling confident. We have to finish what we were unable to finish last year."

Checa's Superbike form at Miller:
2010: Race 1- DNF, Race 2 - DNF
2009: Race 1 ? 2nd, Race 2 ? DNF
2008: Race 1 ? winner, Race 2 ? winner

Country: USA Name: Miller Motorsports Park Length of circuit: 4.907 km Pole Position: right Race distance: 21 laps = 103.047 km
LAP RECORDS: Best lap ? Checa (Ducati) 1'48.045 (2010). Superpole ? Checa (Ducati) 1'47.081 (2010).
2010 RESULTS: Race 1 - 1. Biaggi (Aprilia); 2. Haslam (Suzuki); 3. Haga (Ducati). Race 2 ? 1. Biaggi (Aprilia); 2. Camier (Aprilia); 3. Crutchlow (Yamaha)

ALSTARE SUZUKI READY FOR MILLER WSB

Team Suzuki Press Office - May 25.

Team Alstare Suzuki World Superbike rider Michel Fabrizio heads to America this week for round five of the series with increased confidence following his podium in the last round at Monza.

This will be the fourth time that Miller Motorsport Park in Salt Lake City, Utah has hosted a WSBK event and this year's race once again takes place on a Monday, Memorial Day, and a Public Holiday.

In the past three years, Fabrizio has done well at the 4.907 kilometre circuit and has taken four podiums. The track is situated at high altitude, which saps engine performance, and so Team Alstare Suzuki engineers have to make sure that their GSX-R1000s are performing as strongly as possible.

Michel Fabrizio:

"The first time we went out on the track here, I thought there was something wrong with my bike, because it seemed slow. But we all soon realised that it was because we were so high up and the engine performance was affected. It's the same for everybody of course and now we are much more used to it.

The track is quite technical and there are a variety of curves to keep you on your toes.

"Last year was not so good for me, but the year before that I got a second and a third place. It's a very tough season this year and our team has been working very hard to give me a competitive bike and that's why I was so happy to get on the podium at Monza - I felt that we deserved it.

"It's always a mixed blessing being in a one-rider team because although you get a lot of attention, there is nobody to exchange information with. For sure, if there were two riders in the team, we would probably progress more quickly. But that's not the case, so we all just have to get down to it and do the best we can. After the last round, I am thinking that more podiums are possible and it would be great to get one - or maybe two!"

Official Kawasaki Superbike Duo Head To Utah

WSBK, Salt Lake City, USA, 24 May 2011

Two of the three official Kawasaki riders in the WSBK championship will take part in the fifth round at MMP but Chris Vermeulen will instead make preparations for a return at the following race.

Lascorz has been offered the opportunity between the previous round in Italy and the MMP race weekend to test the latest developments on the awesome new Ninja ZX-10R in Japan, at the Autopolis circuit in the extreme west of the country. He will then make the trip to the USA in time for race weekend, which uniquely runs from Saturday to Monday at this venue. Raceday at MMP held on the national Memorial Day holiday, when America honours its servicemen and women.

For Sykes the Miller Motorsports Park circuit is one of his favourites on the 13 round campaign trail. The track offers up a tough challenge as it is located at such a high altitude compared to most others and the machine has to hold some angle of lean for the vast majority of the 4.907km lap. Sykes is currently 13th in the overall rankings, with Lascorz one point and one place behind.

Vermeulen will continue his recuperation in Europe during the MMP weekend, but he will test at Aragon in early June to get some welcome track time on his Ninja ZX-10R machine outside of the pressures of a regular race weekend. This special test will show how his recently injured left elbow has healed up since the previous round at Monza as well as giving Chris the chance to try our different machine settings and learn a circuit he has never been to before. Aragon is KRT's designated test track, and the venue for the seventh round of the championship.

Pedercini Team Kawasaki Superbike riders Roby Rolfo and Mark Aitchison will also travel to America looking for more points scoring success. Roby is 17th in the standings, Mark 18th.

There will be no Supersport World Championship race at Miller, but Kawasaki Provec Motocard.com riders Broc Parkes and David Salom will return to action alongside all the other riders in the main classes at Misano on June 12.

Tom Sykes: "Personally, I really look forward to this race, it is a beautiful part of the world and it is massive bonus to go racing there. We struggled there last year but we have a new bike this year and I am positive about that. I am hoping we can go there and certainly improve on last year but also improve on our previous results this year and move forward again. Hopefully we can make our hard work at the previous rounds count in America. The challenges for the rider there are the time zone change and the massive increase in altitude. You lose a bit of power from the bike at the high altitude but what you need is a bike set-up which turns and holds a good line at Miller. There is little of this circuit where you are completely upright. It sounds obvious but the more time we get on the bike the better we will be."

Joan Lascorz: "The idea of testing in Japan is to try some new ideas and give some feedback. I have my crew chief with me and I hope we can give good input into the development program. Our bike is so young and has more potential than we have been able to demonstrate so far. The track at Miller is exciting. The altitude means there is less power, but that is the same for everybody. The track has some fast corners that I like very much, so let us see if we can make it an easy bike to change direction with and then we can go as fast as the best ones. The team, Kawasaki, my crew chief and I are all learning the set-up steps we should avoid and the steps that give us something positive. Is not been easy for me to be competitive immediately, with no winter test, a new bike and new staff to work with, but I'm quite sure we are working with passion and motivation to improve race by race. We are preparing the base for a great future winning bike."

Chris Vermeulen: "It is disappointing to not race in America but my injuries are still healing. The good thing is they are improving. The decision was taken with the team and Kawasaki to miss the race and concentrate on testing. That's not only for myself to get some time under my belt away from the racing, but also to get more information about the bike. That means I should hopefully come back strong at Misano which is a track I know quite well. I have never ridden at Aragon before so it will be good to get some track time in and learn the track before we go there after Misano."

O Magazine's June issue celebrates the 25 years of the Oprah Winfrey Show.

As the Oprah Winfrey Show ends today after 25 years on air, host Michel Martin and O Magazine Editor-in-Chief Susan Casey continue exploring Oprah Winfrey's career. They discuss why products sell out after being on air or in the magazine, how O Magazine will move forward, and what the June issue offers readers.

MICHEL MARTIN, host: I'm Michel Martin and this is TELL ME MORE from NPR News.

As Oprah Winfrey wraps up 25 years on her top rated network television talk show, we're continuing our exploration of her career on television and in other platforms. In a moment we are going to speak with motivational speaker and author Iyanla Vanzant. She was once one of Oprah Winfrey's most popular contributors. And she recently returned to the show on this final season after a long break. And we'll find out what happened in the meantime.

But, first, we're continuing our conversation with Susan Casey, editor-in-chief of O, the Oprah Magazine, which has just celebrated its 11th anniversary in existence. It was one of the most successful magazine launches in history. Is it the magazine or is it the show that kind of creates a run-on thing? Like, for example, I'm thinking about Oprah's favorite things are known to sell out after appearing in the magazine or on the air. I'm thinking of UGG sequined boots.

SUSAN CASEY O MAGAZINE: Oh, everything we've put in the magazine. In fact, if it's a small business, we'll say to them, are you really ready for what's going to happen? Because there is this sense of trust that Oprah has really conveyed across media. And if something appears in the magazine, the readers assume that it has her mark of approval. That somehow these are all things that they believed she has vetted herself, even though she doesn't always anymore.

We hear from her if there is something that she doesn't feel is right. And I think at this point everybody who's working on the magazine has a very true and deep sense of what she would pick.

MARTIN: So you've been at the helm for two years. What was your mandate taking over? And what's your mission going forward?

MAGAZINE: The real question was how do we make the next 10 years as dynamic as the first? And it's always an evolution. I mean, you need to stay current. Even though the mission has been very true from the beginning, it hasn't changed a lot. It starts to look different, as Oprah looks different, as the world looks different. It was always a magazine that I loved as a reader. It was very cerebral and thoughtful.

My predecessor, Amy Gross, was one of the editors I really admired in the business. She was a Buddhist. And I think a lot of the stories in the magazine reflected this very thoughtful, quiet center that she had. And I think the team that I have now, we're looking around the world and we're thinking, there is so much going on. We really want to be the filter for that. We want to capture a sense of excitement about everything that's possible as it goes forward.

So I think looking at the magazine now you might feel that it's a little more colorful, a little more narrative and possibly a little more action filled.

MARTIN: How do you think the magazine will change without the network television program as a kind of a fact of life, because there was some shared editorial content? For example, there would be extended interviews that Oprah might have on the air. But then an extended Q&A version would also appear in print or, say, a profile - someone might be profiled on the program as well as in the magazine. What changes now that that particular program no longer is on the air?

MAGAZINE: Well, she will continue to do the interviews, which are called O talks. And they will be in the pages of the magazine regularly. It's funny that we actually don't have a lot of overlap with the TV show. We obviously share DNA. But going forward, we're very excited about OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network. There's a great potential for us to do lots of collaborative stuff with them. They're in the process right now of sort of creating themselves. And I think that we can really play a role along with, obviously Oprah when she - after she has one good long vacation - is going to come back and really spend some time with it. And we expect to be a part of that as well.

MARTIN: You're a writer yourself, an author and were also very involved in adventure coverage, wilderness reporting. How would you describe the genre of reporting that I think many people associate with you before you came to OWN?

MAGAZINE: Well, I'm a narrative nonfiction author, but I also - I tend to focus on the ocean in my work. And we're very conscious right now - and you may see more of that in O because I obviously think it's very important for everybody to see more coverage of environmental issues in a really fun and narrative way.

I mean, when we had the oil spill last summer I went down there to go into it to see what it was about. And I wanted to see how O readers would react to that and it was very positive.

MARTIN: Susan Casey, before we let you go, tell us about the June issue.

MAGAZINE: It's really a celebration of all kinds of arcana and highlights from all 25 years. There is a wonderful conversation between Oprah and Gayle just really talking about the beginning and the highlights for them. There is a look behind the absolutely extraordinary production that was "The Oprah Winfrey Show" taking an entire audience to Australia. There are special letters from Oprah, and in particular, let me just warn people, Oprah's - what I know for sure, do not read it without a Kleenex box next to you.

MARTIN: Susan Casey is the Editor-in-Chief of O, the Oprah magazine and she was kind enough to join us from NPR's New York Bureau. Susan Casey, thank you so much for joining us.

SUSAN CASEY: Thank you.

Broccoli sprouts show benefits for diabetics: RCT - Health ...

According to findings published in the peer-reviewed European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a daily dose of five or 10 grams or the broccoli sprout powder was associated with an increase in the total antioxidant capacity of the blood, and reductions in malondialdehyde (MDA), a reactive carbonyl compound and a well-established marker of oxidative stress.

The study adds to the growing body of science supporting the potential health benefits of broccoli and broccoli sprouts, most often touted for their potential anti-cancer activity.

Benefits of broccoli

The tissue of cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts, contain high levels of the active plant chemicals glucosinolates. These are metabolized by the body into isothiocyanates, which are known to be antioxidants and powerful anti-carcinogens. The main isothiocyanate from broccoli is sulphoraphane.

Broccoli sprouts are reportedly the richest source of a compound called glucoraphanin (sulforaphane glucosinolate ? SGS ), containing up to 50 times more than mature broccoli. SGS is the precursor of sulforaphane.

The new study looked at the potential antioxidant activity of broccoli sprout powder to counter oxidative stress in diabetics.

Stress

Oxygen-breathing organisms naturally produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), which play an important role in a range of functions, including cell signaling. However, over production of these ROS from smoking, pollution, sunlight, high intensity exercise, or simply ageing, may overwhelm the body?s antioxidant defenses and lead to oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress has been linked to an increased risk of various diseases including cancer, Alzheimer?s, and cardiovascular disease.

Researchers also note that oxidative stress is a key driver in the onset of insulin resistance, which ultimately leads to diabetes. Diabetes itself is associated with increased levels of oxidative stress, and this can promote the development of diabetes-related complications (Journal of Biochemical and Molecular Toxicology, 2003, Vol. 17, pp. 24-38).

Study details

Researchers from the National Nutrition and Food Technology Research Institute at the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran recruited 81 diabetics to participate in their double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial.

Participants were randomly assigned to receive either five or 10?grams per day of the broccoli sprout powder, or placebo, for four weeks.

Results showed that both broccoli groups experienced significant decreases in MDA, that well-established marker of oxidative stress, as well as reductions in levels of oxidized LDL cholesterol, another oxidative stress marker.

?The ideal dose of broccoli sprouts has not yet been determined,? wrote the scientists.

?The doses used in this study provided 225 micromoles and 112 micromoles sulforaphane isothiocyanates daily per 10 g and 5 g broccoli sprout powder doses, respectively.

?Effects on lipid peroxidation parameters were seen only with the higher dose, although positive effects on TAC were seen with both doses,? they added.

?Further studies with longer duration and different doses are needed to confirm the effects of broccoli sprouts and related mechanisms,? they concluded.

Diabetes

Diabetes affects an estimated 24 million Americans, equal to 8 percent of the population. The total costs are thought to be as much as $174 billion, with $116 billion being direct costs from medication, according to 2005-2007 American Diabetes Association figures.

Canadian Film Tax Credit Financing ? Easy Web Articles

Canadian Film Tax Credit SchoolingFilm Tax credit financing for film, animation, and digital media productions continues to be a sought right after financing by Canadian entrepreneurs.
Canadian entrepreneurs are fortunate in that several recent changes have been produced to improve the overall viability of Film and Tv credits in Canada.
Using Ontario as an example in March 2010 the government enacted legislation that increased Ontario Personal computer Animation credits. For that reason financing of such projects just brings in additional capital. As an example labour expenditures that are qualified and vetted increase to 100% for arms length employees who don?t have incorporation status ? as an example ?freelancers?.
Within the animation and visual effects location there was a government focus to eliminate the requirement that effects had to ? primarily ? be completed with digital technologies.
How can these film tax, Television, and digital media credits be financed. Financing these tax credits is a really boutique enterprise in Canada. Entrepreneurs and their advisors are cautioned and advised to function with credible, skilled specialists in this niche financing location.
The film tax credit financing (also as animation, Television, etc) is essentially a bridge loan when your production entity has a financing need.. The amount financed could be a mixture of federal and provincial claims, and it normally recommended that the total value of our claim be in the 200, 00.00$ range, which would be a mixture of both the federal and provincial portions of your credit.
We meet with several firms who also have needs for other types of financing, which would incorporate separate SR ED (SR&ED) credits, equipment financing, etc. It would sometime make prudent sense to consider a financing that satisfied the complete needs of the company or production.
The hottest new sectors of financing in this area are the popular animation, virtual reality and of course gaming areas of consumer entertainment.
Naturally to be able to finance a claim it must be reviewed and processed by the appropriate tax credit office, for instance the Ontario ? OMDC ? tax credits & Financing Programs Dept ?.
In our work with clients we advise that it typically takes 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer to finance a tax credit. This process should not be daunting for the entrepreneur or your production company, as it mirrors any other financing organization might undertake- for example an application form, due diligence, legal documentation of the financing, etc.
We would point out though that the main emphasis on the financeability of your claim is the actual tax credit itself, as in many cases the product has not ?gone to market ?so to speak.
Financing your film, multimedia, and Tv tax credits is a great way to access bridge capital and allow our entity to immediately access funds, as opposed to waiting for funds until post production and commercialization.
Talk to a film tax credit financing expert and you are on the way to an unique method of financing your productions.

Best answer:

Answer by Fancy That
if you like the idea of spending time in jail, go for it.

Dude, this is the first time you ever filed bankrupcy, the bankruptcy courts do this every day.

Do you really think you are going to devise a scheme they haven?t seen a million times before?

Investigators go into this assuming you are going to try to pull something.
