Is Your Ice Rink Safe? - Figure Skating

It has been recently publicized that carbon monoxide poisoning can occur in ice rinks. Apparently, rinks that use ice resurfacing machines that are fuel powered, not electric, can give off dangerous fumes. Only a few states (Minnesota, Rhode Island, and Minnesota) have set up safety standards for ice rinks.

This is really frightening since figure skaters spend hours and hours inside ice arenas. The affects of exposure to dangerous fumes can cause terrible health hazards.

It might be wise for all those involved with our sport to ask ice rink managers if their facilities are using fuel powered resurfacers and edgers. Also it would be wise to learn about a rink's ventilation system. Another important question to ask is if carbon monoxide detectors are installed in a rink.

I've spent much of my life inside ice rinks. I imagine that I have been exposed to dangerous fumes after all these years. It is very scary.
