So the kids have already seen "Brave" and "Madagascar 3" but they're climbing the walls, and you really need some theater air-conditioning? "Ice Age: Continental Drift" opens this week. And if you choose to fight the heat in your air-conditioned TV room instead, the first half of "Breaking Bad's" final season launches this week, and Sigourney Weaver's "Political Animals" miniseries debuts. Here's our guide to the week in entertainment.
FRIDAY: 'Ice Age: Continental Drift'
Fighting the heat? Sink into an icy cinema and watch cartoon animals who live in the Ice Age. "Ice Age: Continental Drift," the fourth movie in the popular series, comes to theaters this week. Ray Romano returns as Manny the mammoth, with Denis Leary voicing saber-toothed cat Diego and John Leguizamo as Sid the sloth. And fan favorite Scrat the saber-toothed squirrel has his own parallel storyline as usual. Nothing major ... just that his hunt for acorns manages to break up supercontinent Panagaea into the world we know today. Whoops! Oh, and "Game of Thrones" fans will love hearing the voice of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) as the prehistoric ape who takes on our familiar gang. (Opens July 13.)
SUNDAY: 'Breaking Bad'
The fifth and final season of "Breaking Bad" is about to premiere, but fans will have plenty of time to savor it. Only eight episodes from the last season will air in 2012, with the second half of the season coming around next summer. There'll be plenty of drama on the acclaimed AMC show. As fans know, Walt and Jesse's multimillion-dollar meth lab was burned down last season, and boss Gus Fring met a face-splitting end. (July 15, 10 p.m., AMC.)
SUNDAY: 'Political Animals'
In "Political Animals," a new six-hour miniseries on USA, Sigourney Weaver plays Elaine Barrish, a U.S. secretary of state who's also the former first lady. And she doesn't think small -- in a preview, she announces that she wants to be ranked in the same company as Eleanor Roosevelt, Cleopatra and Elizabeth I. Other similiarities to Bill and Hillary Clinton abound -- Elaine's husband appears to have cheated on her while in the White House, and she herself ran for president but now says she won't run again. The miniseries changes things around somewhat -- instead of daughter Chelsea, the Barrishes have two sons, one of whom admits that his sexuality is a matter of public debate. Has anyone texted news of this miniseries to Hillary Clinton? (Premieres July 15, 10 p.m., USA.)
