The coati (?coati? for short) is a member of the raccoon family and is native to Central America and South America. The exact origin of the name ?coati? is unclear, however, we think it looks like something from the Tupi language of Brazil.
The coati, the raccoon is similar in behavior, but its nose and tail like a possum in size. A coati can take up to 2 ? feet long including their tail 1foot. Men are generally twice as large as females.
There are five known species of coati. Only two of these five species occur in the Central American country of Belize. Different types of coatis are differentiated by size, color, and their geographical habitats.
Coatis are omnivores ie they eat meat along the fruit and vegetables. Coati diet consists mainly of invertebrates such as insects and worms, as well as fruits and roots. Coatis are well known, small lizards, rodents, birds and bird eggs to eat.
The life of a coati is 7 to 8 years in the wilderness. But in captivity, as in a zoo, or if kept as a pet when they are treated correctly, life can be doubled, up to 15 years and older.
Maintaining a coati as a pet can be very difficult but not impossible. Many people in Central and South American coatis to keep as pets, with a very intelligent animal, and some can even housebroken. However, because of a wild wild coati and his fighting skills when he provoked a domestic cat could be the best choice for a pet.
