I am an European traveling to the US and I have a question about ...

I am gonna be an international student at University of California and i gotta decide between:

1) UC insurance, which is 400usd per year and it looks good (cheap as i am a student)
2) insurance bought in my home country, which does not convince me: it seems to me that i should pay everything and then I?ll be refunded, which sounds stupid because if I break a leg i cant afford it on the spot.

Im not sure about the UC insurance, but if it?s a standard american insurance, is the money going straight from the insurance to the hospital or what?

Some of the health insurance plans available through American colleges and universities are great, others not so great. What you?ll want to look out for (and possibly avoid) are plans that place dollar caps to your coverage or require you to get all your health care rendered through the university medical facility.
