Staying in a hotel at Cal State Fullerton where I spoke tonight for their writers? night. One woman who spoke was very nervous and had trouble speaking. She?d been nominated fro Emmys and wrote for television. She was smart and witty. Her words spilled from her in spasms. She was both funny and anxious, but I couldn?t tell if she was having a good time or not.
There was a comedian who has 65,000 Twitter followers. He told stories about wanting to kill himself and about driving his car into the Department of Water and Power and then spending time in jail with all four limbs in a cast, and he was in a hospital gown and had the casts and was trying to move. It sounded terrible. And he had an analogy that had to do with hummingbirds and eagles and unmentionable parts of the body. It sounds confusing the way I put it, but it made more sense at the time. Then there was an editor who spoke on the how writers can get published. He has published sixteen books, and he had a power point presentation with which he explained the publishing process. He asked where I had my notes for speaking and I said I was born ready to speak. That isn?t true, but it sounded good to say it.
I?m sure I took eighteen months or so to start talking and then of course, when I started talking, my father took off. Probably didn?t want to hear my little voice. But that?s another story.
Back to tonight. It was a really interesting evening. It was one of those evenings that afterward you?re still thinking, Seriously, did that just happen? Was I just part of a rather odd panel? Yes, I think I was.
Writers and people who work in publishing are some pretty intense people. It?s not boring. That?s a fact.
