Sarah Silverman shows soft side in "Wreck-It Ralph"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Sarah Silverman has built her career largely on raunchy jokes about sex and other decidedly adult topics.

So it may come as a surprise that a woman famous for an R-rated song about sleeping with actor Matt Damon and for pro-Obama viral videos is now voicing the role of an adorable 9-year-old girl in a Walt Disney family film.

The animated film, "Wreck-It Ralph," comes out in U.S. movie theaters on Friday. It is about a video game character named Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) who is tired of always being the bad guy. He goes on a game-hopping journey to prove he can be a hero.

Silverman plays the precocious Vanellope von Schweetz who lives in the candy-themed racing game Sugar Rush. Considered a "glitch" by the other kids because she flickers, Vanellope is an outcast who just wants a chance to race with the other girls.

At first glance, the casting of a stand-up comic like Silverman might seem an odd choice. But Silverman told Reuters she knows all about the tough-on-the-outside/sensitive-on-the-inside Vanellope.

"I relate to everything about her," the 41-year-old said about her character. "I know this girl. The scrappiness and the feeling of being on the outside, looking in and wanting to play. And that what we are most ashamed of - the 'glitch' in each of us - can be our super power, our greatest asset, if we let it."

In Silverman's case, she cites her bed-wetting as her own "glitch," which she chronicled in her 2010 comic memoir, "The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee."

"I was a bedwetter until I was in my teens," she said. "(I took something) from my childhood that I thought would be my greatest shame and let it inform the greatest part of my life. I went in to comedy and was not scared because I had suffered great humiliations growing up. Bombing in front of strangers on stage? Who cares! The stakes got lower for me because I had nothing to lose."

Silverman said she was excited to potentially become a role model to kids, "especially girls," via Vanellope. The cartoonish perkiness that's part of her persona has already landed Silverman guest spots on kids' shows like "Yo Gabba Gabba."

In fact, Silverman says she has plenty of comedic material for kids and is pushing further into the youth market with a soon-to-be released app.

"I have an app coming out called 'Uncle Sarah' and it's for toddlers and babies - I can babysit your kids on your iPad!" she joked. "There's all this interactive stuff. There's a song I wrote. I'm excited about it because it's so weird."

She'd also like her own kids - someday. "I'm baby crazy but I think I'm going to adopt when I'm at a young grandma age," she said. "I love kids so much but I love my life and I love taking off at a moment's notice. I want to have kids when it's all I want and I can give them the undivided attention they deserve."

Next up, Silverman plans on filming a cable TV special - her first in seven years - for HBO that will involve both stand-up and film pieces.

Although Silverman points out that she'll never feel "total job security" in her profession - her NBC pilot "Susan 313" was not picked up for the fall 2012 TV season, for example - she calls her ability to work in comedy, make videos and perform stand-up as "the gift that keeps on giving."

"As long as I always work on it, change it, be willing to bomb, recalibrate who I am and reflect that on stage, it can last."

Scientists build the first all-carbon solar cell

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Stanford University scientists have built the first solar cell made entirely of carbon, a promising alternative to the expensive materials used in photovoltaic devices today. The results are published in the October 31 online edition of the journal ACS Nano.

"Carbon has the potential to deliver high performance at a low cost," said study senior author Zhenan Bao, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford. "To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a working solar cell that has all of the components made of carbon. This study builds on previous work done in our lab."

Unlike rigid silicon solar panels that adorn many rooftops, Stanford's thin film prototype is made of carbon materials that can be coated from solution. "Perhaps in the future we can look at alternative markets where flexible carbon solar cells are coated on the surface of buildings, on windows or on cars to generate electricity," Bao said.

The coating technique also has the potential to reduce manufacturing costs, said Stanford graduate student Michael Vosgueritchian, co-lead author of the study with postdoctoral researcher Marc Ramuz.

"Processing silicon-based solar cells requires a lot of steps," Vosgueritchian explained. "But our entire device can be built using simple coating methods that don't require expensive tools and machines."

Carbon nanomaterials

The Bao group's experimental solar cell consists of a photoactive layer, which absorbs sunlight, sandwiched between two electrodes. In a typical thin film solar cell, the electrodes are made of conductive metals and indium tin oxide (ITO). "Materials like indium are scarce and becoming more expensive as the demand for solar cells, touchscreen panels and other electronic devices grows," Bao said. "Carbon, on the other hand, is low cost and Earth-abundant."

The Bao group's all-carbon solar cell consists of a photoactive layer, which absorbs sunlight, sandwiched between two electrodes.

For the study, Bao and her colleagues replaced the silver and ITO used in conventional electrodes with graphene -- sheets of carbon that are one atom thick -and single-walled carbon nanotubes that are 10,000 times narrower than a human hair. "Carbon nanotubes have extraordinary electrical conductivity and light-absorption properties," Bao said.

For the active layer, the scientists used material made of carbon nanotubes and "buckyballs" -- soccer ball-shaped carbon molecules just one nanometer in diameter. The research team recently filed a patent for the entire device.

"Every component in our solar cell, from top to bottom, is made of carbon materials," Vosgueritchian said. "Other groups have reported making all-carbon solar cells, but they were referring to just the active layer in the middle, not the electrodes."

One drawback of the all-carbon prototype is that it primarily absorbs near-infrared wavelengths of light, contributing to a laboratory efficiency of less than 1 percent -- much lower than commercially available solar cells. "We clearly have a long way to go on efficiency," Bao said. "But with better materials and better processing techniques, we expect that the efficiency will go up quite dramatically."

Improving efficiency

The Stanford team is looking at a variety of ways to improve efficiency. "Roughness can short-circuit the device and make it hard to collect the current," Bao said. "We have to figure out how to make each layer very smooth by stacking the nanomaterials really well."

The researchers are also experimenting with carbon nanomaterials that can absorb more light in a broader range of wavelengths, including the visible spectrum.

"Materials made of carbon are very robust," Bao said. "They remain stable in air temperatures of nearly 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit."

The ability of carbon solar cells to out-perform conventional devices under extreme conditions could overcome the need for greater efficiency, according to Vosgueritchian. "We believe that all-carbon solar cells could be used in extreme environments, such as at high temperatures or at high physical stress," he said. "But obviously we want the highest efficiency possible and are working on ways to improve our device."

"Photovoltaics will definitely be a very important source of power that we will tap into in the future," Bao said. "We have a lot of available sunlight. We've got to figure out some way to use this natural resource that is given to us."

Other authors of the study are Peng Wei of Stanford and Chenggong Wang and Yongli Gao of the University of Rochester Department of Physics and Astronomy. The research was funded by the Global Climate and Energy Project at Stanford and the Air Force Office for Scientific Research.

Top 10 Fitness Trends Picked For 2013 ? CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

Oct. 29, 2012 ? Forget fancy fitness fads. Your body is the only equipment you need for one of the hottest fitness trends: body-weight workouts.

A new survey of fitness trends shows body-weight training, including back-to-basics exercises like push-ups, planks, and pull-ups, is expected to be one of the top 10 fitness trends of 2013.

Researchers say people have been using their own body weight for centuries as a form of resistance training. But this is the first time it has made it into the trend survey, because gyms are now packaging it as part of exercise programs.

?Body-weight exercises are a proven way to get and stay fit,? says researcher Walt Thompson, PhD, of Georgia State University. ?In a time when many people are concerned with cutting expenses, body-weight exercises are a great way to feel great and look toned without a big financial investment.?

Top Fitness Trends Predicted for 2013

Taking the top spot in the fitness trend survey for the sixth year in a row are fitness professionals.

Researchers say education and certification programs for health and fitness professionals are experiencing exponential growth. The number of employed fitness trainers is projected to rise by 29% from 251,400 in 2010 to 311,800 in 2020.

According to the survey, the top 10 fitness trends predicted for 2013 are:

1. Educated, certified, and experienced fitness professionals ? Jobs for fitness workers are expected to rise much faster than the average for all other occupations, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

2. Strength training ? In the No. 2 spot for the second year in a row, strength training continues to be a strong trend. No longer restricted to body building, most people now incorporate some form of weight training to improve or maintain muscle strength.

3. Body-weight training ? Body-weight exercises use minimal equipment and include push-ups, pull-ups, planks, and squats.

4. Children and obesity ? Exercise programs aimed at the problem of childhood obesity are also a major fitness trend. Schools are increasingly partnering with commercial and community-based physical activity programs to prevent and treat rising childhood obesity rates.

5. Exercise and weight loss ? Consistently in the top 20 fitness trends, researchers say most popular diet plans incorporate exercise to encourage weight loss.

6. Fitness programs for older adults ? Fitness clubs are capitalizing on an aging baby boomer generation with age-appropriate exercise programs.

7. Personal training ? As more personal trainers are becoming certified, they are becoming more accessible in a variety of settings, such as corporate wellness, community-based, and medical fitness programs.

8. Functional fitness ? Researchers define functional fitness as using strength training to improve balance, coordination, force, power, and endurance to perform activities of daily living. Functional fitness programs are designed to reflect actual activities done as a function of daily living and are often used in fitness programs for older adults.

9. Core training ? Using equipment like balance balls and wobble boards, core training stresses strength and conditioning of the stabilizing muscles of the mid-section. Researchers say exercising the core muscles in the hips, lower back, and abdomen improves overall stability for daily activities and sports performance.

10. Group personal training ? A boon for budget-conscious clients, personal trainers now often provide services to small groups of two to four people at deep discounts.

The survey was completed by 3,346 health and fitness professionals worldwide and appears in the American College of Sports Medicine?s Health & Fitness Journal.

Outages, floods hit two N.J. refineries; others restart

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The second-largest refinery on the U.S. East Coast suffered some flooding and a power outage from Hurricane Sandy, and two smaller plants also lost power, as glitches threatened to slow the recovery in fuel supplies disrupted by the massive storm.

While the region's biggest plant, in Philadelphia, and several others were ramping up operations after escaping damage, other facilities, pipelines and terminals were struggling to restore the flow of supplies that had slowed to a trickle.

Phillips 66 said there was "some flooding in low-lying areas" of its 238,000 barrel-per-day Bayway, New Jersey, plant, which was shut on Monday as a precaution. The plant remains closed, the company said, and utility PSE&G said power was likely to be restored no sooner than in 24 to 48 hours.

News of trouble at Bayway, nicknamed the "gasoline machine" for its key role in supplying motor fuel to the New York City area, pared losses in gasoline futures which had fallen more than 2 percent as output recovered elsewhere and traders bet that fuel consumption would be hit.

RBOB futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), which was due to reopen its trading floor on Wednesday, closed down 1 percent, their first loss in three days. By late afternoon they had erased losses and turned higher.

Other power-related glitches also surfaced after the storm, which left more than 8 million customers without electricity, shut seven major regional airports and all but halted traffic on the nation's most heavily traveled roads.

As the storm moved north, a power outage shut Imperial Oil's 121,000-bpd Sarnia, Ontario, refinery, but the company said it expected to restart units later in the day.

Hess Corp's 70,000-bpd Port Reading, New Jersey, refinery, which had also shut ahead of Sandy, lost power and had no time frame for restarting.

The northern Line 3 segment of the Colonial Pipeline, a conduit that supplies as much as 15 percent of the East Coast's 5.2 million bpd of gasoline, diesel and fuel demand, was still idle, but the company said it had not suffered any operational damage. Portable generators were being brought in to restore power to the Linden tank farm and resume shipments.

The company asked customers to divert fuel shipments bound for the New Jersey area to southern markets.

The flooding at Bayway, which had been seen by experts as the refinery most vulnerable to Sandy's record 13-foot (4-meter) storm surge and subsequent power outages, is a potential second nightmare for Phillips 66, which had struggled to restore its Alliance, Louisiana, refinery after Hurricane Isaac in August. That storm pushed more than 2 feet of floodwater into the plant.

PHILLY PLANTS SEEN OK

Operations in the Philadelphia area appeared set to resume quickly. Philadelphia Energy Solutions' 330,000-bpd refinery, the biggest in the region, escaped damage and was restoring operations at the Point Breeze half of the plant that was shut, the company said, confirming a Reuters report.

Industry group Genscape said its infrared cameras detected the restart of key crude and vacuum distillation units.

Delta Air Lines subsidiary Monroe Energy's 185,000-bpd Trainer, Pennsylvania, plant operated through the storm, and was expected to reach full rates next week after a maintenance overhaul, a source with knowledge of operations said.

PBF Energy was ramping up its Delaware City refinery after minimal run-cuts, another such source said. A company spokesman confirmed reports that the plant had flared briefly, but said the incident had not affected operations.

Delaware City and PBF's 180,000-bpd Paulsboro plant in southern New Jersey, which had throttled back to reduced rates ahead of Sandy, "ran well through the storm", spokesman Michael Karlovich said.

He said personnel had completed a "thorough assessment" of the facilities, and that PBF would not provide further updates on logistics or operations.

The precautionary refinery closures were more widespread than during Hurricane Irene in August 2011, when only the Bayway plant shut completely.

John Auers, senior vice president and refining specialist at Turner, Mason & Co in Dallas, said East Coast plants, even those near the water, are better protected from potential flood damage than those that suffered weeks-long outages on the Gulf Coast following hurricanes Katrina and Rita seven years ago.

Still, even minor flooding can be a concern and plants without sufficient on-site generators may have to wait for utilities to restore outside power. The largest risk may simply lie in restarting vast, intense equipment.

"You're talking about heating up oil to fairly high temperatures, putting it through processing units at high pressure," Auers said. "Anytime you interrupt that steady-state there is always the potential for issues."

The vast network of terminals and smaller pipelines that serves the region - seen as a potentially greater danger than refinery outages - was also being assessed.

NuStar Energy said it could not access its Linden, New Jersey, terminal, while Magellan Midstream Partners said it would resume loading at two truck racks in Delaware and Connecticut later in the day. Motiva was reopening terminals apart from those in New Jersey and New York which were flooded and those in Connecticut which had lost power.

Major ports that supply the area with some 1 million bpd of imported fuel were starting to reopen. The Port of Boston opened without restrictions and was expected to unload a gasoline cargo later on Tuesday, an official said.

DEMAND IN FOCUS

Barring major damage, most experts expected the region's fuel supplies could bounce back quickly, while demand was likely to take a much deeper knock. Some 170,000 bpd of jet fuel demand alone was shut for a third day as all three major New York area airports remained shut, with no date for resuming flights.

Benchmark New York gasoline futures prices, which rallied more than 6 percent before the storm as traders feared a disruption in supplies, were still down 1 percent or 3 cents on Tuesday as the focus shifted to the likely cut in fuel consumption due to grounded flights and empty roads. U.S. crude oil futures rose slightly, reversing Monday's dip.

One trader offering to sell physical cargoes in the New York Harbor market found no buyers on Monday.

"For the moment you have a big black hole where there used to be oil demand," said Credit Suisse oil analyst Jan Stuart. He said 80 percent of demand in the New York metropolitan area had been affected somehow.

"In the end, the demand deficit outweighs the supply deficit."

Airlines had canceled more than 15,770 flights in the past four days, flight-tracking service FlightAware said.

The Illustrated Man vs. Super-Graeber | Savage Minds

In the comics industry, special issues that promise one hero ?versus? another are usually long on gimmick and short on action. Keeping with that tradition my blog post promises an epic confrontation when in reality I?m not really engaging Graeber?s thought provoking essay ?Super Position? in a substantial way. I?m going to use the author?s Freudian critique of the summer blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises as catalyst to reflect on the anthropological study of popular culture.

As an aside I will say this about Graeber?s essay: he uses Roman numerals to demarcate thematic chunks of the essay, which allows him to write without transitions. Whenever I see this technique it always makes me think of Walter Benjamin, that patron saint of the Marxist critique of pop culture. To invoke Benjamin in an essay on Batman is like saying, ?I?m very serious about playing around here.? Or, at least that?s what I?m thinking when I write essays with Roman numerals.

I.
Graeber?s subject is Christopher Nolan?s series of Batman movies, which are themselves based on Frank Miller?s legendary characterization of the hero in ?The Dark Knight Returns? (1986), widely considered one of the greatest comic book stories of all time (and rightfully so). Miller?s book closed the door on the Silver Age version of the character and redefined the Gotham City universe as gritty and violent. Among the movie going public Miller is also known as the original author of Sin City and 300, while to the comics crowd he?s associated with legendary runs at Daredevil and Wolverine.

Miller himself is a reactionary ass and his slander of the Occupy movement as composed of ?louts, thieves, and rapists? was only the latest salvo in a stream of proto-fascist dribble. So when Graeber pins down the The Dark Knight Rises as ?anti-Occupy propaganda? he is pretty much on the money. A more patient man than I could probably connect the dots between the Reagan-era conservatism of ?Returns? with Rises. Neoliberalism and the apocalypse, maybe. Revenge, definitely.

What are superhero movies all about? And why are they so popular right now? These are the questions that prompted me to think about how anthropology could actually forward such a project. How ought we compose a research agenda focused on mass media and popular culture? Personally, I find myself consistently disappointed in most everything academics have written about pop culture. I?d like to think that anthropology could do better. What Graeber is doing here is using history and critical theory to write a polemic in order to make a political point. That?s fine, but it?s only one way that anthropology might go about designing research about comic book super heroes.

What could potentially make an anthropology of pop culture difficult is method. How, exactly, do you use ethnography to study it? There are a few entry points that could be alternatives to/ supplements for a theory-based cultural critique and they revolve around production and consumption.

Some ideas?

Production. Objective: study the ?backstage? process from creative talents to publishing and distribution. To be sure there is a difference in scale between the indies and the major labels but it all starts with a creative person or team having an idea. Role-model: ?Latinos, Inc.? by Davila ? the author conducts an ethnography of New York advertizing agencies focusing on how they imagine, study, interact with, and represent Hispanic markets through highly orchestrated advertising campaigns.

Consumption. Objective: learn what pop culture means to the people who love it. We call the cultural practice of consuming a comic book ?reading? and it is basically a private experience. You sit still, hold the book in your hands, and interpret what you see. Using your imagination you are transported into a fictional world. However, the majority of readers share their love for the genre with others. In this way you experience pleasure twice: once in private by reading and once in public by being a fan. Role-model: ?Reading the Romance? by Radway ? the author uses ethnography to investigate why romance novels are so popular among women and what is really happening when people read by studying a book club and the bookstore the club members frequent.

Consumption as production. Objective: investigate the performance of fandom through the creative re-appropriation of established characters. Internet culture has made more visible the tendency of fans to use beloved characters and themes as templates for their own creations and self-expressions including cosplay, fanfic, animated GIFs, remix and mash-up just to scratch the surface. Is increased visibility making this form of fandom increasingly popular? Role-model: ?Textual Poachers? by Jenkins ? author uses theory from De Certeau to talk about how sci-fi and fantasy fans engage in self-expression by embezzling bits and pieces from their favorite universes and re-presenting them in various forms.

Ethnography as pop culture. Objective: use whatever genre of pop you are interested in as the mode of communication with your readership. Anthropology in particular seems to struggle in communicating its findings to the wider public. Appropriating popular genres could be one model for reimagining ethnography is especially well suited for the study of pop culture. Role model: ?Shane, the Lone Ethnographer? by Galman ? the author uses the comic book format in place of conventional text to communicate introductory ethnographic topics to readers.

II.
There are two vulnerabilities to the academic study of popular culture that are (possibly?) unique to this particular topic. One ? few academics can hope to match the total genre mastery of superfans and thus leave themselves open to critique for ?not getting it? on a very basic level. Two ? pop culture is by definition ephemeral and dominated by fads, likewise the academic critique of pop culture does not age well; whatever hot topic you write about today will quickly fall out of fashion.

Back in Graeber?s secret lair, he?s moving into a critique of super hero movies. But first he opts to look at comic books themselves and this is where things start to get Freudian. Citing Eco, the author notes that comics share with dreams an obsession with repetition.

The plot is almost always some approximation of the following: a bad guy, maybe a crime boss, more often a powerful supervillain, embarks on a project of world conquest, destruction, theft, extortion, or revenge. The hero is alerted to the danger and figures out what?s happening. After trials and dilemmas, at the last possible minute the hero foils the villain?s plans. The world is returned to normal until the next episode when exactly the same thing happens once again.

Here we might observe that, as per my methodological discussion above, anthropology is better suited to studying people than plots. Maybe it?s my closeted structuralism, but in anthropological studies of narrative forms the plot is, sometimes, beside the point. What narratives mean to the people who use them and traffic in their symbolism is a far more interesting set of questions.

Graeber does go on to make a keen observation that I have not heard in comics circles before: whereas villains are constantly engaged in some creative project or another, the hero only ever reacts and seldom engages in such projects of their own. This really speaks to me on an intuitive level and I think it might pan out to be true if we inventoried a representative sample of universes. Just consider Ozymandias from ?The Watchman? (1987), a hero who becomes a villain once he takes on a world changing project!

While I?m sympathetic to Graeber?s leftist political project, his essay also highlights the difficulties of using theory to navigate the realms of pop culture. While the author moves to suture consuming comic books and consuming movies it?s still apples and oranges to me. Status in comic book fandom, like jazz or baseball fandom, is measured out by the accumulation of esoteric factoids and errata (perhaps demonstrating that level of mastery is part of the appeal). But even I can tell you this:

Batman on the page and Batman on the big screen are fundamentally not the same person.

This conflation of book and movie is driven home by the art, presumably chosen by the design staff at The New Inquiry, to accompany the essay. The addition of vintage comic book covers makes the essay more appealing visually and some of them are supremely evocative of the author?s subject, as with the first one which features Lex Luther dreaming of Superman. But comic book superheroes reside in complex universes, the knowledge of which fans covet and use to authenticate their prestige. There are canons, alternate universes, spin-offs, and endless debate about which is the proper heading for any given story. Let?s not even get started on the ?What if?? series.

The result is often a self-contradictory mess. Just check out this brief synopsis of Bane, the villain from The Dark Knight Rises. When a movie director goes to translate this mess to the screen the result is like that diagram in Latour?s ?We Have Never Been Modern?: in the realm of the real there is a tangle of meaning, but modernity only ever allows us to represent it to ourselves as order. The result is we think we have created progress when in reality we have not, this is why Nolan?s was an impossible task.

So all the Freud and the lesson on how law is based on violence leads to this: the superhero needs the villain just as the cop needs the criminal. Without villains we?d have no need for heroes. Superheroes themselves aren?t fascists, Graeber writes, ?They are just ordinary, decent, super-powerful people who inhabit a world in which fascism is the only political possibility.?

This is not the ordinary way of looking at superheroes. Just as easily one could have used Freud to read the dream of comic books as wish fulfillment. The reader (likely a boy) holds an ambiguous social status: privileged because he is male, disempowered because he is not an adult. The superhero then offers a child?s fantasy of what the adult world is like. To the boy his parents are both hero and villain. Their knowledge is plainly superior to his and their power over his world seemingly limitless.

It?s also a supremely dissatisfying conclusion to a Batman fan because it gets the genre ?wrong? much as Nolan gets the character of Bane ?wrong? ? at least according to the high standards set by SMOF. And while the politics of ?Rises? and Nolan?s Batman are hot today, in a few years nobody will care about them. I mean, have you read Lawrence Grossberg?s essays on rock music? No. The kids don?t listen to rock anymore anyways.

So kudos to Graeber for attempting a critical reading of Batman in light of Occupy. But its not clobberin? time quite yet. If anthropology wants to do something with pop culture other than interpret it with critical theory, then how the hell are we going to do it? And can we do in a way that sucks less than Cultural Studies?

Mood of the Nation: Worrying how others are faring

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? On the eve of the 2012 elections, The Associated Press interviewed dozens of Americans to try to gauge the economic mood of the nation. People were asked about jobs, housing, gas prices, retirement and other issues. Among them was Vicki Williams, 47, of Mechanicsville, Va., outside Richmond. Williams feels secure in her job as an occupational therapist for a school district. Her view of the economy has brightened. Yet she worries that the nation has drifted away from a political culture that once seemed more inclined to help the needy.

___

Williams says she can see the economy getting better, little by little.

She knows more people who have found jobs in recent months, particularly those with skills and advanced degrees in business or health care. And she sees more friends confident enough in the economy to invest in long-delayed home improvement work.

"People aren't as fearful about any minute they will lose their job," Williams says.

At the same time, she's disheartened by what she sees as a more polarized nation. It typically happens when Williams, who backs President Barack Obama, talks politics with neighbors who support Mitt Romney.

"When we have conversations about helping others out, the attitude is, 'Anybody that's received any kind of assistance from the government in any way is just a taker.' Whereas from my experience, I've seen families I work with have to use government assistance for specific things... and then are able to then get themselves back on their feet and maybe help someone else."

Average pay in the United States isn't keeping up with inflation, and some people Williams knows are barely getting by on their paychecks. They're one medical crisis away from a financial catastrophe. As a health care professional, she also knows people who rely on Medicaid and other public aid and would be vulnerable to federal cuts.

She says she's fortunate not to have needed government help herself. Williams remained employed throughout the recession even as many states and localities cut jobs.

"People will always need therapy," she says. "My field is in demand."

Together with her husband, an Army reservist and military contractor, Williams has maintained a comfortable upper-middle class lifestyle. They have two children: One is in college; the other is working on an internship and attending college classes.

She's kept up contributions to her 401(k) and doesn't fret about retirement. The couple owns a home that's held its value. This year, they had hardwood floors installed in the kitchen and bathroom.

"The houses in our neighborhood are selling," she says. "If we wanted to get out, we would make a nice profit."

In her view, the president doesn't deserve all the blame for the still-weak economy or high unemployment, now at 7.8 percent. She wishes Republicans and Democrats would work more cooperatively to strengthen the economy.

"My dream for America," Williams says, "is that we'll go back to our core values of taking care of other people and looking out for other people instead of just looking out for ourselves."

Honeybees harbor antibiotic-resistance genes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Bacteria in the guts of honeybees are highly resistant to the antibiotic tetracycline, probably as a result of decades of preventive antibiotic use in domesticated hives. Researchers from Yale University identified eight different tetracycline resistance genes among U.S. honeybees that were exposed to the antibiotic, but the genes were largely absent in bees from countries where such antibiotic use is banned.

The study appears on October 30 in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

"It [resistance] seems to be everywhere in the U.S.," says Nancy Moran of Yale University, a senior author on the study. "There's a pattern here, where the U.S. has these genes and the others don't."

Honeybees the world over are susceptible to the bacterial disease called "foulbrood," which can wipe out a hive faster than beekeepers can react to the infection. In the U.S., beekeepers have kept the disease at bay with regular preventive applications of the antibiotic oxytetracycline, a compound that closely resembles tetracycline, which is commonly used in humans. Oxytetracycline has been in use among beekeepers since the 1950s, and many genes that confer resistance to oxytetracycline also confer resistance to tetracycline.

Using sensitive molecular techniques, Moran and her colleagues screened honeybees from several locations in the United States and from Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand as well as several wild bumblebees from the Czech Republic, for the presence and abundance of tetracycline resistance genes. They found that U.S. honeybees have greater numbers and a more diverse set of tetracycline resistance genes than honeybees from the other countries.

Moran says it is reasonable to expect to see widespread resistance among bees, considering the decades-long use of oxytetracycline in honeybee hives. "It seems likely this reflects a history of using oxytetracycline since the 1950s. It's not terribly surprising. It parallels findings in other domestic animals, like chickens and pigs," says Moran.

Moran notes that beekeepers have long used oxytetracycline to control the bacterium that causes foulbrood, but the pathogen eventually acquired resistance to tetracycline itself. Of the foulbrood pathogens Melissococcus pluton and Paenibacillus larvae, Moran says, "They carry tetL, which is one of the eight resistance genes we found. It's possible that the gene was transferred either from the gut bacteria to the pathogen or from the pathogen to the gut bacteria."

Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand do not allow beekeepers to use oxytetracycline in hives, so it is perhaps predictable that honeybees and wild bumblebees from these countries harbored only two or three different resistance genes and only in very low copy numbers, suggesting that the bacteria did not require the genes very frequently.

The authors of the study point out that by encouraging resistance and altering the bacteria that live in honeybee guts, decades of antibiotic applications may have actually been detrimental to honeybee wellbeing. Studies have suggested that the bacterial residents of the honeybee gut play beneficial roles in neutralizing toxins in the bees' diet, nutrition, and in defending the bee against pathogens. By disrupting the honeybee microbiota and reducing its diversity, long-term antibiotic use could weaken honeybee resistance to other diseases. Hence, the treatment that was meant to prevent disease and strengthen the hive may actually weaken its ability to fight off other pathogens.

Moran says while the study is interesting from the perspective of honeybee health and could have implications for how honeybee diseases are managed, the presence of resistance genes in the honeybee gut doesn't pose a direct risk to humans. These gut bacteria, says Moran, "don't actually live in the honey, they live in the bee. We've never actually detected them in the honey. When people are eating honey, they're not eating these bacteria."

How To Improve Your Home: A Short Guide |

Many people, both experienced and new, are looking for information on how to improve their homes. Lots of tutorials, books and guides are available. This article will give you some wonderful advice on how you can do your renovations the correct way.

A kitchen remodel is less expensive if you refinsh existing cabinets. It is possible to paint the baseboards and add new doors and pulls in order to transform them. Plus, you can do this for a fraction of the cost it would take to replace them!

If you decide to make substantial bathroom renovations, think about making your rooms accessible for handicapped individuals. Although you may not need your bathroom to be handicap-friendly now, if you stay in the home when you get older, you may need it to be. Most improvements will add value when it comes time to sell your home.

Always figure out how much a home improvement project is going to cost you before you get started. It goes without saying that the best projects to do are those that have the highest return on investment. Not every project is created equal. You need to make sure you have the right information on different kinds of projects and what will get you the most out the money you spent.

Seek out different kinds of insulation when you?re thinking of redesigning the rooms in your house. You can consider purchasing permeable house wraps, rigid foams or comprehensive wall systems. Research the prices of each type, and determine how much you want to pay.

Add visual interest to your home by using drywall mud to texture walls. It is easy to texture. Just trowel the drywall mud in place and use something like a stiff bristled brush, a sponge, or even a wadded up plastic bag to dab at the drywall mud and add texture.

Vinyl tiles can be a cost effective product for tiling floors if you want something cheaper than stone or ceramic tiles. Not only is vinyl durable and water resistant, it also has an adhesive backing which makes it easy to install. Vinyl flooring comes in two varieties: separate tiles for small areas and large sheets for bigger areas.

Improve the looks of the kitchen or bathroom by installing ceramic tile. You can have unique designs on the tiles, or you can go for a certain solid color that provides a nice chic look. Your home?s look can really improve with these tiles.

You do not have to replace the cabinets in your kitchen in order to make your kitchen look great. A fresh coat of paint can breath new life into your house. There are a myriad of different finishes and stains that you can choose to improve your cabinets with. So, do online research on the various techniques, choose the one that suits you best, and save money while updating your home.

As we have said before, improving your home is a very popular subject because homeowners are always wanting to do it. Many homes have things that can be changed. By integrating the above tips into your research, you can locate all the right information you need to pull off a successful project.

ASC has examples of all phases of construction including replacement windows.

Forex - EUR/USD steady on European financing woes, storm ...

Forexpros - The euro held steady against the dollar on Tuesday after erasing earlier losses on fears Greece and its lending agencies remain at odds over austerity measures tied to bailout money.

Markets in the U.S. and a great deal of businesses in the heavily populated Atlantic coast were closed with the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.

The powerful weather system roared ashore along the New Jersey coast as a monster hybrid system packing tropical and post-tropical characteristics.

In Asian trading on Tuesday, EUR/USD was trading up 0.02% at 1.2907, up from a session low of 1.2906, and off from a high of 1.2909.

The pair is likely to find support at 1.2886, Monday's low, and resistance at 1.2936,? Monday's high.

Greece has asked for a two-year extension to push through austerity measures in exchange for financial assistance.

The country will run out of money in mid-November, though members of the ruling coalition have balked at wage reforms, fueling fears Athens is digging its heels in amid negotiations with its troika of lenders, the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the European Commission.

Elsewhere in Europe, Spanish retail sales fell 10.9% from the same month a year ago, much worse than market expectations for a decline of 6.2%, which dampened appetite for risk.

Also in Europe, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy criticized the idea of giving a new European Union Commissioner greater say-so over eurozone national budgeting policies, saying it could be counterproductive, though he did say Madrid would considering seeking a bailout "if we think it is in the interest of Spaniards."

European financing concerns sent the pair falling though uncertainty over the extent of Hurricane Sandy's damage coming just days before the Friday's October jobs report and Tuesday's presidential elections allowed for choppy trading and opened the door for bottom fishers to bring the single currency up, especially after German inflation data met expectations.

The German Federal Statistics Bureau said consumer price inflation accelerated at an annualized rate of 2.0% in October, in line with expectations and unchanged from September.

The euro, meanwhile, was up against the pound and up against the yen, with EUR/GBP trading up 0.09% at 0.8055, and EUR/JPY trading up 0.05% at 103.03.

Later Tuesday, Spain is to release preliminary third-quarter gross domestic product rates.

The U.S. is to release data on consumer confidence, a leading indicator of economic health, as well as industry data on house price inflation, an important indicator of demand in the housing sector.

Microsoft drops Windows Phone Store developer registration to $8 for eight days

Microsoft drops Windows Phone Store developer

How amped is Microsoft to get developers into the Windows Phone 8 Store? The company announced today at Build that it's lowering developer registration to $8 -- that's down from $99. Got to get in there quick, however -- that price is only good for the next eight days. Seems to be some kind of theme here, no?

Update: Looks like the discount situation is a little more involved than just that. According to Microsoft, "You'll be charged $99 USD or equivalent in your local currency, and we'll refund the difference in the next 30 to 45 days." Ninety-two percent discounts don't just happen overnight, after all.

Real Estate Caf?: Investing, Foreclosures, and More | Real Estate ...

?

The current real estate market is ripe for investment opportunities, even with the foreclosure inventory falling and home prices rising. We are definitely on the path toward real estate market recovery with many key cities already seeing significant progress.

Below is a look at some pertinent real estate market related news.

Election Day and Interest Deductions

Both Obama and Romney have tried to avoid talking about the real estate market as much as possible, especially in the debates. However, both claim to have a ?plan? with minimal details being released on said plans. One such plan involves interest deductions. However, a closer look at who would actually?benefit from these interest deductions?uncovers that very few middle class citizens would truly reap the benefits. Why? It all comes down to itemized deductions.

A vast majority of Americans opt for the standard deduction as opposed to selecting the itemized deductions route. Since the interest deduction would only be taken advantage of by those using itemized deductions, then families making between $100,000 and $500,000 per year would actually be the one benefiting from the interest deductions plan?not struggling Americans.

Investing Opportunities Galore

In other news, real estate investing is taking off yet again. Although Florida currently has a struggling real estate market, experts predict that the state will soon see a rise in not only domestic investors but also?international investors. The same thing is happening throughout much of the country, especially in California where progress toward recovery is occurring quicker than anticipated.

The specific interest of the investor varies greatly depending upon the individual and his or her specialties and interest; however, many investors are?investing in college towns. While some investors are purchasing foreclosures and other distressed properties and renting them out to students, faculty, and staff at local colleges, others are purchasing homes below market value and flipping them for a profit.

Either way, real estate market investing is definitely a current trend.

Rise in Foreclosure Assistance Programs

Partly due to the bank settlement agreement, many states now have foreclosure assistance programs to help struggling homeowners stay in their homes. As a result, there are a number of?alternatives to foreclosure?that more people are becoming increasingly aware of, especially with many state-wide programs designed to provide foreclosure counseling for those facing the possibility of losing their homes. Everything from loan modifications to short sales are possible in the current real estate market and the increased access to foreclosure support and counseling helps struggling homeowners make educated decisions that could help them avoid foreclosure.

In conclusion, real estate market progress is underway, but make sure to pay careful attention to talks of interest deductions as a plan to help the middle class. If you are an investor then consider investing in college towns. If you are a struggling homeowner make sure to look into foreclosure counseling before making a decision on an alternative to foreclosure.
