Windows Live Messenger will finally be put out to pasture on 15 March, Microsoft has said in an email to Messenger users, after which time its users will need to switch to Skype.
The company has been threatening the once-dominant messaging platform with closure since November 2012, as a result of its desire to move its users to Skype. Microsoft acquired Skype in October 2011.
For several months, Messenger users have been able to talk to Skype contacts and vice versa, as the platforms were unified, but from 15 March Messenger logins will no longer work. To assist the switchover, Microsoft has added an "upgrade" button to Messenger that uninstalls it and replaces it with Skype.
Only one exception has been made - China - as the service is run under a license there. For everyone else, 15 March is the cut-off, though the software will function fully until that date.
