College football's about to get a championship involving a series of games, two of which will likely be played at bowls. In a sense, it's as much a bowl championship series as it is a playoff, and it's far more of a series than the decrepit exhibition arrangement ever has been. But calling the four-team playoff the Bowl Championship Series would get the whole thing off on the wrong foot, as Dennis Dodd reports the suits in charge have concluded:
One source indicated that the old name couldn't be attached to a playoff that will "eventually" be bigger than the Final Four, and second only to the Super Bowl in terms of this nation's sporting events. The term "BCS" simply had too much of a negative connotation. The commissioners couldn't afford for the controversies attached to the "Bowl Championship Series" to accompany major college football's first playoff.
Public relations-wise, many of those controversies can indeed be sidestepped for a time by coming up with a new name. Here is a list of recommendations for what to call the new system:
