Prevent chronic kidney disease? SubrinaYasmin, Mehruba Sharmin and Tania Tasnin

? The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs that lie on either sides of the spine in the lower middle of the back. The main function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess water from the blood. The kidneys process about 200 litres of blood every day and produce about two litres of urine. These also play a major role in regulating levels of various minerals such as calcium, sodium, and potassium in the blood. The kidneys also produce certain hormones that have important functions in the body.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined as having some type of kidney abnormality or ?marker? such as protein in the urine, and having decreased kidney function for three months or longer. The most common causes of CKD are diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and glomerulonephritis. Together, these diseases cause approximately 75% of all adult cases related to Kidney disease.

Symptoms of kidney disease are ? strong urge to urinate frequently, especially at night (nocturia), fatigue and weakness (from anaemia or accumulation of waste products in the body); loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting; Itching, easy bruising, and pale skin (from anaemia); shortness of breath from fluid accumulation in the lungs; headaches, numbness in the feet or hands (peripheral neuropathy), disturbed sleep, altered mental status (encephalopathy from the accumulation of waste products or uremic poisons), bleeding (due to poor blood clotting); are the symptoms of chronic kidney diseases.

Chronic kidney disease is a disease that must be managed with close consultation with health care practitioner. There are, however, some important dietary rules that help to slow down the progression of kidney disease and decrease the complications. This is a complex process and must be individualised, generally with the help of health care practitioner and a registered dietitian. Lessening protein intake may slow the progression of CKD. You can take salt not more than 4-6 grams a day to avoid fluid retention and it also helps controlling high blood pressure. Adequate water consumption is very important for kidney. But if you are in a critical condition, your physician might restrict your water consumption. Potassium restriction is necessary in advanced kidney disease because the kidneys are unable to remove potassium. Examples of foods with high potassium include bananas, oranges, nuts, and potatoes. Decreasing phosphorus intake is recommended to protect bones. Eggs, beans, soft drinks, and dairy products are examples of foods high in phosphorus.

Maintain kidney health by consuming the right types and quantities of foods, exercise regularly, drink plenty of water, and absorb other healthy habits, such as adequate rest, recreation and reduce stress levels. At all cost, avoid destructive lifestyle habits such as smoking, drug, alcohol and keep healthy.
