Florida Bar honors Barton, Armstrong for pro bono service

James M. Barton II, Tampa circuit court judge, and lawyer Rosemary E. Armstrong will receive awards from the Florida Bar?

Barton will receive the 2012 Distinguished Judicial Service Award, which honors outstanding and sustained public service as it relates to support of pro bono legal services, a written statement said.

He has contributed more than 1,000 hours to pro bono efforts since joining the bench in 1991, helped launch a campaign to recruit new pro bono lawyers and was chair of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee from 1993 to 2010.

Armstrong, a sole practitioner in Tampa, will receive the 2012 Tobias Simon Pro Bono Service Award, the highest statewide pro bono award, the statement said.

The award recognizes contributions by Florida lawyers in making legal services available to people unable to afford them. As a volunteer with Bay Area Legal Services?

Armstrong was elected to the board of directors at Bay Area Legal Services in 1989 and has been a board member continuously for 22 years, including three terms as president.
