Monovision is a form of vision correction in which one eye is corrected to spot distance clearly and the other eye corrected for well-defined near sight. This is commonly employed if you?re presbyopic.
Presbyopia starts in the early forties. It is a condition in which the lens inside the eye hardens and focusing up near becomes difficult. Typically, this is corrected with reading, bifocal or mulifocal spectacles.
Contact lenses can also be employed to right presbyopia if you do not want to wear glasses. Multifocals contact lenses can be used to perceive well at distance and up close. A form of laser eye treatment which corrects the eye in this way is known as presbylasik.
Contact lenses can also correct presbyopia by altering the residual Rx in the eye, leaving one eye short sighted to be able to read and do near work.Contact lenses can also be employed to right presbyopia if you do not want to wear glasses. Contact lenses can also rectify presbyopia by altering the residual Rx in the eye, leaving one eye short sighted to be able to read and do close work. The other eye is corrected for clearly distance vision. This is known as contact lens monovision.
The eye which is corrected for distance is your dominant eye. This is the eye when you would utilization when looking into the viewfinder of an SLR camera or through a telescope. The other eye would be corrected for reading.
Generally your eyes are either both seeing well in the distance or both seeing well up near. With monovision correction, when you look into the distance one eye is well-defined and the other is fuzzy. The opposite occurs when reading.
Some irritation with monovision correction is expected as your brain and visual system adapt to the new method of seeing. Most successful monovision contact lens wearers adapt to the view within a few days and appreciate the freedom from spectacles for both distance and near sight.
Unsuccessful patients normally report:
Headaches. This is a bigger problem if the prescriptions used in the two eyes vary greatly.
Problems driving specifically reverse parking the car. This is due to turning to the sides to check how the car is lined up on either side; the distance eye will give clear cut vision while the reading eye will show blurred vision.
Irritation with prolonged computer utilization. Since one eye is for far distance and the other for reading (typically at 40cm), there isn?t an eye corrected for the intermediate distance where the computer screen is placed. This means the computer screen is slightly blurred and for clear cut vision you would have to lean closer to the screen which can lead to postural problems.
However, if monovision contact lenses are successful for you, this visual set up can be permanently had with laser eye treatment. The operation for this is exactly the same as with normal refractive operation, except one eye is intentionally left short sighted to compensate for the reading.
