RunCore's Mini DOM packs single-chip, SATA-based SSD into tiny places

Image

Fitting a truly quick solid-state drive into a small space isn't easy, and for that reason RunCore's new Mini DOM (Disk On Module) stands out from the crowd. It's billed as the first single-chip SSD to use a SATA interface (SATA II, to be exact), giving it that much more bandwidth than the pokey IDE and PATA DOMs of old while remaining under half the size of a regular mSATA drive. RunCore's own tests show it hitting about 113MB/s sequential reads and 47MB/s writes. Neither figure will knock the socks off even a mainstream budget SSD like Intel's SSD 330, but they're more than brisk enough for embedded gear. The drives can survive brutal conditions, too: an Industrial Grade trim level can survive temperatures as chilly as -40F and as scorching as 185F. So, the next time you pry open some military equipment and see one of these sitting inside, in three different formats and capacities from 8GB to 64GB, you'll know exactly what you're looking at.

Nikon D3200 now shipping from Best Buy, unboxing video gets personal with new features

Image

Nikon promised us a "late April" shipment of its D3100 replacement, and sure enough, it looks to have met that self-imposed deadline. The black D3200 kit is now shipping from Best Buy warehouses, and while a litany of other reputable e-tailers have the unit listed (check our links below), we're seeing it backordered elsewhere. That said, these things are obviously trickling into the places that matter most, and determined to-be buyers can almost certainly call around to find one in stock. If you're still on the fence, have a look at our hands-on here, and head on past the break for a lovely unboxing video tour.

Hudson's sister to 911: 'Please help my mama'

Julia Hudson's 911 call was released Monday.

The dramatic and heartbreaking 911 call placed by Jennifer Hudson's sister upon finding the body of her mother has been released.

And it's exactly as gut-wrenchingly devastating and emotional as you would imagine.

More from E: Jennifer Hudson's sister testifies in family murder trial

The call was released this morning on the ruling of Judge Charles Burns, and against the plea by the prosecution not to do so.

"Help, please," Jennifer's sister Julia Hudson is heard telling the 911 operator. "Oh, God. Somebody's killed my mother, somebody's killed my mother...Please help me. Oh my God, oh my God."

When asked by the dispatcher if she needed an ambulance, a near-hysterical Hudson replied, "I don't know. I'm scared...please...please...can you please send an ambulance, please. Oh my God.

"She's on the floor and I see blood coming from her head...I just came home from work and there's a bullet hole in our front door...she's 57 years old. Please help my mama. Please just send an ambulance," Julia says.

Toward the end of the three-minute call, while still on hold with the dispatcher, Julia can be heard speaking again, ostensibly to a neighbor.

"Where's my brother? What happened? She's on the floor...I'm here by myself."

More from E: Jennifer Hudson breaks down on stand

The call then cuts off. (Listen to the call on E! Online.)

The prosecution was opposed to the call being released, arguing on Friday that it had not yet been fully placed into evidence.

"To ensure the state's right to a fair trial and the defendant's right to a fair trial, we object at this time to releasing the 911 call," state attorney Jennifer Bagby argued Friday.

To no avail, as it turned out.

RIM shows off BlackBerry 10 touch keyboard with gesture support

BB 10 Keyboard

What's the best thing about the BlackBerry platform? Most would say it's the keyboard, which continues to be world-class in the company's most recent handsets, like the Bold 9900. One of the big questions on the fans of the BB faithful in the new operating system was how the company could re-create that magic on a touchscreen. Well, Thorsten Heins just showed us how on-stage at BlackBerry World, showing off a new, smart touch keyboard that is said to adapt to your touches. It has elements of predictive text, like many other keyboards, but it also relies heavily on gestures. For example, to get to numbers and special characters, just swipe upward from below and the keyboard layout changes. You can swipe up and down to cycle through these layouts and, like SwiftKey, swipe left to delete whole words. It doesn't exactly blow many of those aftermarket Android options out of the water but it certainly looks like it could be among one of the best stock keyboards out there.

Verizon gets new prepaid plans, adds Jetpack hotspot to contract-free lineup

Verizon Gets new prepaid plans

And just like that Verizon has revamped its prepaid pricing structure. Starting tomorrow, May 1st, the carrier will be offering unlimited talk and text packaged with 1GB of data for $80 a month. The new offering will be available first with the Samsung Illusion, a disappointingly 3G handset, though, one that wont demand a two year commitment to Big Red. Verizon is also adding the Jetpack MiFi 4510L LTE mobile hotspot to its contract-free offerings for $130. Prepaid plans for the 4G wireless hotspot start at $15 for 250 MB a week, but quickly climb to $60 and $90 for 3GB and 10GB, respectively. For more info check out the PR after the break.

Three Things You Must Consider When Choosing Basketball Shoes ...

There are lots of different basketball shoes to choose from, so how do you go about finding the right pair? Before you go shopping, you have to figure out what you can afford to spend on shoes and your style of play. Aside from this, it?s always good to pick a pair of shoes that you like the looks of. Let?s go over some of the main points to consider when you want to find the perfect pair of basketball shoes.

I eventually got a lot of email messages about the write-up on how to dribble a basketball and I hope this particular one assists a lot of people as well.

It?s good to start off with an idea of how much you want to spend, as basketball shoes vary quite a bit in price. The fact is, if you play basketball regularly, you?ll have to buy new shoes frequently. So buying the most expensive shoes isn?t practical if you don?t have a substantial budget for them. It?s possible to find good basketball shoes for around forty dollars, but the prices go well into the hundreds. You really don?t want to buy a pair of bargain sneakers for ten dollars to play basketball in. Shoes like that will wear out in no time, and may result in problems for your feet or ankles. This doesn?t mean you have to buy the most expensive styles, as many perfectly good basketball shoes can be found at a good price.

It?s a no brainer, but basketball shoes should be very comfortable, so that?s one of the first things you should look for. Be sure that you are selecting the perfect shoe size, which may not be universal across all brands. For example, if you wear a 12 in one brand, you may wear an inch more or less with another brand.

You will find basketball shoes made from many different materials, and many of them are synthetic. Whereas in the past, most shoes were made from leather, today many use a combination of materials, such as mesh and synthetic, that are more durable and offer the best support and stability. The first basketball shoe was a canvas shoe, and those shoes are still out there today. While canvas shoes are not considered state of the art by modern standards, they can be comfortable and long lasting. You should make it a habit of trying on basketball shoes to determine who they feel rather than buying them because they?re made of a particular material.

Basketball shoes come in three basic types, Low-tops, Mid-tops and High-tops. You will usually think of high tops when you think of basketball shoes, as those are the most common types. This type provides the most ankle support, so it makes sense that many players would choose this style.

In conclusion, basketball shoes can help you stay light on your feet for a long period of time. Basketball shoes that are poorly made, that don?t fit, or that are worn in can leave you open to getting hurt badly. This article proved what the right basketball shoe can do and how to find it. You have to find the shoes that are right for the type of player you are and for the kind of feet you have.
